Surge in Student Applicants

What is the deal with the surge in freshmen applications? Is it because our year has more people than previous years? more people are chosing to go to college? more people are chosing some colleges over others?

Ive heard that Boston College, Umich, NYU have had a "large" upsurge in applicant numbers, all schools I applied to.

Yes there are more freshman applicants but this is relatively small when comparing the huge rise in college apps. Because of the "perceived" danger of the rise in freshman applicants, many applicants are applying to MORE colleges (10+). This is why many colleges show such huge rises in apps and thus have to resort to waitlisting as well as rejecting qualified applicants. Good luck.

Somewhere on Collegeboard...

Why Are Applications Increasing?

The increase comes from a surge in births during the 1980s. Children of the baby boomers are coming of age. Experts predict applications will continue to rise faster than openings at most colleges through about 2010.

And what AcceptedAlready said too

Holy Cross had an increase of 41%.

Duke also had an increase. "Someone said" their rate was down to 19% now.

Yeah, it is absolutely crazy, almost all top tier universities experienced 5%-50% increases in applications, as well as other colleges. Plus the fact that many more colleges use the common application (therefore making it easier for students to apply to multiple colleges) has made a dramatic increase.

man why couldnt it be as "easy" as when our parents did it.

Believe Holy Cross had the highest percentage increase of any selective school-over 40% is amazing. Another school that saw big increase was Duke.

Holy Cross did away with the SAT requirement, which I believe is partly responsible for the surge. Hamilton did away with SAT scores as well.
