Hi there. I want to become a surgeon more than anything. What are some good classes that I can take to get into a good college for undergrad? Will it be required for me to get straight A’s all throughout high school so I do not get locked out? For some reason, this year I’ve been struggling with tests. I re-read the chapter and my notes constantly, but as soon as I get on the test I don’t know the information! Any tips?? Thank you
How old are you? You sound young.
You do not need to get straight A’s in high school to get into a good undergrad school. There is no such thing as being locked out. Take the most challenging courses that you can reasonably handle and do your best in them. Talk to your teachers about your problems with the tests. They might have some advice about how to study better.
Well, at a minimum you are facing 4 years of college, 4 years med school, 5 years of a general surgical residency training before you can call yourself a general surgeon; even more if you were to subspecialize (eg cardio surgery). So buckle up as you can so bye bye to your 20s and a chunk of your 30s as you’re in for quite a challenging road ahead. Are you really sure at this point you want to become a surgeon more than anything? I do not need an answer.
“Any tips??”
Instead of focusing on surgery, maybe think more broadly and try to develop skills that will help you no matter what pathway in life you go down or college you attend (eg reading, writing, critical thinking, test taking ability, communication skills, etc). If that involves talking to teachers, counselors, tutoring, so be it. Consider challenging yourself by taking the hardest courses (eg AP) you can take AND do well in. It’s okay if you don’t take the most challenging courses in hs. You’ll still be able to get into college, and even going to community college can be a pathway to med school. Don’t forget to have time in hs for non academics, such as ECs, socializing. Good luck.
