N95 duckbills with two elastic headstraps work great for me, and they are now available again. They don’t touch your nose or lips, and so stay dry, and they don’t go behind your ears, so no pain. You can tell they’re working, because with every breath the mask’s walls suck in, so you know they’re forming a seal, and filtering. I wore them all through long days of chemo at the beginning of the pandemic, and they were so comfortable that I forgot I had them on! I would fall asleep with them on, they were that comfortable.
I heard them say you can wear the surgical mask under the cloth mask, so I assume it must be better. It’s hard for me to do it that way because the surgical mask is so big.
The masks that have long straps that go behind your head are MUCH more comfortable to me than the ones that go behind your ears. The Savewoo masks that I buy are around the back of the head and we can all wear them comfortably and they are KF-94, highly protective. Aaron Collins said he wears the mask I chose to buy at his workplace.
In this omicron time, finding masks that are comfortable and protective seems extremely important for self protection.
Have you tried Airgami? They come in 4 sizes. The 3 of us all use Large but if my face were smaller I’d go for Medium.
Hubby and I prefer the version with head straps but daughter prefers version with ear loops. All straps are adjustable.
The filter part would be ok but the edge where the filter hits the cloth and any cloth portion would allow seepage. Homemade masks would not be as good because of the poor seals between the filter and cloth. And what is the quality of the filter?
@parentologist Thanks for sharing your experience with N95 duckbill masks. I’ve seen more people wearing the pouch mask and wondered how they performed. I also prefer masks with head straps.
I wear the BYD N95 with head straps all day at work. I like it because I can move and be expressive and it doesn’t slip or slide on my face. The elastic doesn’t get caught in my hair like the rubber straps on other masks.
One thing that Aaron Collins warned about was the huge # of counterfeit masks and how hard they are to tell from genuine ones except they don’t perform as well in protecting the wearer and are harder to breathe through. That’s why he created spreadsheets of reliable sources. He found that masks sold on Amazon and Etsy were nearly all counterfeit while those purchased from Korea were all genuine.
For those who like headbands, you’ll be looking for US certified N95s. Most of the rest of the world uses ear loops. Here are my faves, in order. Note, the 3M 1870 and 9205 are essentially the same. The 1870 is medically certified. The 9205 is industrial.
A few colleges have been distributing free 3M 9205’s to everyone on their campuses. I also wear it in situations where I may be near people who I don’t know their statuses for an extended period of time, but most of the time, I wear one with ear loops because it’s much easier to put it on and to take it off (especially for people like me who wear glasses). I don’t think surgical masks provide sufficient protection against Omicron.
