Alright. I applied to RPI, thinking that it would be at least a match or a safety for me. However, I just checked online, and it turns out that I was waitlisted. RPI is a very good engineering school, and of course there are going to be tons of people who are more qualified than I am (My stats aren't high off the chart.) But my scores were in their range, my GPA is a little low I suppose, but I have a lot of extracurriculars, and I'm a GIRL applying into ENGINEERING! Perhaps my thinking was wrong on this, but I really thought that I would get in since they only have 25% girls there. Now I'm scared about where else I might be rejected/waitlisted from. Any thoughts? Also , what do you think my chances into Lehigh are now? This is extremely disappointing....My stats are below:

GPA: 3.45 UW/ 4.2W All honors and AP's
Class Rank: 27/360
SAT: 630 V / 720 M / 610 W = 1950 total, 1350/1600 (Decent I suppose)
Recs: Excellent
Essays: Good to Great

Activities:
Captain of Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor track since 11th Grade
President of Student Council (10th Grade), Class Rep 11th and 12th
President of Red Cross Youth Corps
Member of the Math Team
Member of Chess Team
Member of NASA Club
Member of Interact Program
Participant in Building with Books (Not a dedicated member though)
National History Day Regional Winner (1st Place)
Tutor for LEAD Program at school

Employment: (Not that it probably counts, but I suppose it might show that I'm okay in balancing my time?)
CVS: (June 2007-Present) Photolab Technician, 16 hours per week

Alright, I'm really riding on the fact that I'm a female applying into the engineering program, so please also take that into consideration:

Bucknell University
Lehigh University
Colgate University
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Waitlisted ( :[ )
Worcester Polytechnic Institute- Accepted with 20k/year
University of Connecticut- Accepted- Full Tuition
Northeastern University
Tulane University

sorry this is unrelatef but did you get in uconn rd? Did you really get full tuition?I am waiting on uconn and have noticed that manypeople have gotten their rd decisions.

Hi! I had applied to UCONN early action, as a result of applying for their full ride scholarship. I heard back in December, and unfortunately, I did not get a full ride, but I did receive full tuition. Keep in mind that, I also live here in CT. (Therefor I receive in state tuition). Hopefully that answers your question! But I believe UCONN releases their admission on a rolling basis, so you should be hearing from them soon?

And that’s disappointing about a lot of girls applying. I was hoping that would give me a large advantage. And sorry about your rejection! I’m sure there is another school waiting to accept your awesomeness. :)

Anyone else have an opinion on my chance into Lehigh now? If I can’t get into RPI, I’m very skeptical now about Lehigh.

waitlisted means that u have the stats and potential to graduate for the school, but other students had better stats then u. and maybe this year a lot of good people applied. however you will get in if a lot people rejected them (keep in mind many schools base there waiting list ranking differently, my school was by “ur location from the school”). i was waitlisted as well for the college i go to (engineering program, too), but like two-three weeks later i got in.

good luck

btw, engineering is one if not the hardest programs to get in to, in any school.

and i think u have a good chance to get in to lehigh, every school look at things differently. but i am shock that u didnt get in right away with those stats and being a girl.

OP: I’m also a female, my stats are very similar to yours, save my GPA is a tad bit lower and my SATs are 2070, a bit higher…i have decent extracurricular activities, excellent recommendations, and (i’d like to think) a compelling story i conveyed through my essay…WAITLISTED…

we also overlap on the Lehigh thing…i’m thinking the same thing.

Thanks for your reply! I’m really hoping about Lehigh. I’m all scared about all the other schools I applied to as well, since I thought I was in for RPI. Oh well, I suppose that teachers me to expect the unexpected.

To Tawo: I’m so surprised! I honestly thought that a female applying into engineering with our stats would be cake. Not to say that anything is ever certain, but c’mon. So many colleges are looking for women engineers since they typically carry so few. Are you keeping yourself on the list? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for both of us. -_- I really want to get into Lehigh…booooo.

I have a question for you darkshadow. Did RPI constantly send you emails telling you to apply and to use their candidate choice application. Did they practically beg you to apply like they did for me? Because if they did then I would be very surprised that they waitlisted you.

To Class2009College: I didn’t receive emails but I constantly received mail and letters from RPI. I was urged to used the candidate choice application, and was offered several times for that, as well as for summer programs there. I honestly became interested in RPI through that way, hence, my clearly wrong assumption that I would have an excellent chance getting in. I’m hoping that staying on the waitlist will get me in. And true, RPI is excellent in terms of engineering. I still thought that Lehigh was better? Then again, I’m not excellent on school knowledge.

Yes @ OP. Was kinda leaning on RPI as a safety as well but waitlisted too! Considering their high acceptance rate in Fiske '08…sucks to have applicant #'s increase when we apply :0

well thats because everybody now are apply to like six to nine schools. this will make it harder to get in because each school is getting twice as much appilcants as before (when i apply to college the norm was 3-5). which means larger amount of rejections and waiting list b/c the number of spot are not increasing proportional to the number of appilcants (the number of spots are not increasing by two, u know what i mean).

Good point arod! Some people applied to about 15 schools at my high school. To me, that’s a little excessive. Many applied to that many schools just to say that they got in (Many people have told me that) And I think that it’s kinda selfish of them for doing so (only those who truly express no such interest in their applied schools). It definitely detracts from the admission pool and lowers chances for those who are truly interested.

darkshadow: yes, i’m keeping myself on the list. i checked my decision at exactly 4:00 (west coast lol) and right then filled out the wait list thing…and i’m going to send in my second trimester grades (4.0 with an IB class and 3 AP classes, we have five classes per trimester), and also new SAT scores (about 100 points higher) to see if that helps anything…

I really want to hear from Lehigh now!!!

but, i have this friend who used to live in PA around Bethlehem, and hated it, so i’m kinda scared i would be disappointed with lehigh.

I suppose it may be disappointing as far as the surrounding city goes. But it does deter me from wanting to know! I honestly am expecting the worse as of now. You think sending in third quarter grades is a good idea? I may do that as well, depending on the grades I will receive this quarter.

Haha, yeah, I’m sure my chances for Lehigh/Bucknell are out the window at this point. I applied to Colgate into the Computer Science program, not engineering. Thanks for at least being honest lion! I’m getting mixed things from people. Some say yes, (mainly based on the fact that I’m a female into engineering), while others say it may be a crapshoot. I’m hoping the cards are in my favor though.

Lion, how much do you think they honestly weight that gender factor in engineering?

And to Dork, I’m totally surprised you did get waitlisted with those scores. Those are by far greater than mine are!
