surprise gift to leave at college move in

I wouldn’t know which size to buy for S -  :o

My son is a senior this year and this is making me tear up! I remember when we first took him to college his freshman year, we had a quick, abrupt parting that wasn’t planned in a public space…it about killed me. But I lived. A couple of years ago he had a very important audition in a large city and was going by himself. While he was home for Christmas break I pinned a button with a horse shoe on it on the inside of his suit jacket. He called me on the way to the auditions and was so pleased and delighted that I had done that. It gave him a moment of lightheartedness prior to a very stressful event.

OK, so I’m late to the party, but Paying3Tuitions post #51 had me LOL, which meant that I had to explain it to MY 17-year-old son, so we all got to be embarrased in sympathy.

We are back from move-in.

A couple of days before we left, I was about to print the Winnie the Pooh quote, put it in a frame and run to the Disney store for a stuffed Pooh. But the thought of the quote kept me in tears. I decided that there is no reason for me to do this emotional stuff for D. I am already over-emotional. She knows I am always there for her - don’t need Pooh or any cute quote. Putting that together would only make me feel worse and I definitely didn’t want to make her feel bad about “leaving me” - which she isn’t - she’s only going to college!

I will buy her some fun things this week and send her a care package. She will love getting it in the mail.

As hard as the college application process is, the week of move-in was the hardest part (for all those doing this next year). It was so emotionally draining. The day we got back (Sat), I just had to collapse and go to sleep early. I used a lot of positive self talk to get through this week, tried really hard not to dwell on how much I will miss her. I wasn’t always successful, but it worked a lot of the time.

I made a Family Pictures folder and installed it on Son’s laptop during move in. He didnt want to have family pictures on display so this way he can look at them when he wants to. I included pictures of grandparents, the house, his car, the dogs, cousins etc.

That specific Pooh quote was so powerful for me, thinking about what my S might need at college, that I wrote it out in a card for him. He loved it … and showed it to all his friends!

I’m thinking about having the thought engraved on something …

Braver than you believe …
Stronger than you seem …
Smarter than you think …

Love the Pooh quote. I’m a lifetime lover of Pooh. He and Christopher really did have some beautiful conversations.
There is a song by Kenny Loggins ‘Return to Pooh Corner’. The story goes that he wrote to as a gift to his parents while he was to be studying for final exams. He later added a verse when his son was born.
I can’t provide links to YouTube so I’ll leave it to you. On YouTube search ‘Return to Pooh Corner Acoustic Version’. This should be by Loggings himself, not Pooh montage.
