Surprise Waitlist from William & Mary

I was waitlisted at William & Mary and a little confused. Three kids from my school received full rides (they found out last week) and they had lower STATS and less quality ECs than myself.

Things happen for a reason, so I guess I am not suppose to go there. I did, however, receive an acceptance from University of Richmond today which helped ease the pain. UR, was my safety and it looks like I might be using it!

Do you mind posting up your stats?

My friend got in and she didn't even want to go there. Her stats aren't all that impressive either. Did you get a letter in the mail today?

worldshopper: I feel your pain about the waitlist. Three others from your school getting in surely doesn't help. From your other posts is it safe to assume that those from your school are URM's and hence the W &M Scholar AWard to add diversity to the school? Our student was waitlisted last year and eventually got in. Wrote a nice letter highlighting her reasons for wanting to attend, reflections from her overnight, and just overall sincere words.

Stats:

Top 5% of my class
GPA - 4.6 weighted
Have taken ALL honors and IB courses (except 2 PE and 1 art) since 6th
grade. I don't even know what it would be like to take a reg. class.
In-state
Full IB diploma candidate and have been doing IB/MYP for 7 years.
Recommendations were 1 full page each and very personal and specific.
1300/1600 SATS (might have been the killer for oos but not in-state)
My school has the 2nd highest acceptance rate for W & M
ECs that I have been involved with for 4+ years including the following:
-dance
-theater (actor, director, costume designer)
-figure skating and am co-captian of my team. Have competed in two
semi-national competitions
-sole representative from my school for 2 years in a row to go to
RYLA
- three leadership positions (not counting the skating team)
- Passion is Latin American Culture and have studied in Central
American for 2 summers by myself (no student exchange program).
Started a non profit org to help the kids at a school in Guatemala
where I taught English (again, without the aid of a volunteer org).
That is just a snippet of my ECs, don't want to go into detail.

W & M does not weigh SATs score too heavily, so that is not what led to my waitlist status. At least IMO.

Lastly, 3 kids from my school got in (full rides) with LOWER gpa, lower SATs and average ECs. What else can I say?

Oh, yea -- got DEFERRED from Princeton. Figured if one gets deferred from Princeton, chance of getting in a state school are pretty darn good.

Good news -- got accepted to University of Richmond with a full ride (not including room & board of course) worth $40,000 !!!!!

P.S. --- my grandmother was 1/2 Mexican and legally I could have said I was of hispanic descent but chose not to because I didn't think it was ethical. I am thinking otherwise at this moment.

worldshopper--i can definitely relate. just opened the letter, and i am waitlisted too. wm was the reach school which i was most optimistic about, so needless to say, this is not good news.

i also feel that the fact that they don't weight sat's as much held me back. that was one of my strongest factors. two of my friends got in EA, with way lower sat's than me.

i am thinking that my grades (a c and a b last year) were the problem. but i guess it really doesn't matter--what happens happens. i am just really praying for notre dame now.

congrats on the ur scholarship, worldshopper. i guess waitlisting is easier when you have a safety already waiting for you--if i hadn't received word of a full ride from marymount university yesterday, i would probably be a mess. as it is, i'm just accepting this. (but still wondering why?)

Sorry to hear that eruanneth. W & M was my match so I guess my reaches are totally out of the question!

I know another kid from my school (white female) who got in ED with lower STATS than me.

Whatever school we end up attending, it WILL be the school where we were meant to go.

The $40,000 scholarship from UR is making up for my waitlist status at W & M right now. UR wants to pay me $40K to go there, well that is a good thing, right?

Congrats on the UR scholarship! I'm shocked to hear about you being deferred from William and Mary.

I got into UR too...but they only offered me $10,000 in financial aid (minus loans)...so that wouldn't even be a possibility. Its a great school...its just too expensive.

Well, congrats on getting accepted!

I forgot to tell you all that in December, my mom and I went to Williamsburg and on the way there, our car's engine blew up. We ended up leaving the car in Williamsburg because it was GONE. My mom said that was a sign that I wasn't meant to go there and she was right.

worldshopper, was that the richmond scholar award????? I didn't know they were giving out full rides !

Worldshopper- I am stunned. I really believe W&M made some kind of error. They are a big IB school-- The stats we have are an overall acceptance rate of under 35%. For kids with the IB diploma it is 55.3%. IB continues to be a huge benefit when it comes to college, and is growing every year. If you really have your heart set on it I would call them up and just ask if an error was made...wouldn't hurt. The worst they could say is no. We have not heard anything from them yet but my d did get the e-mail yesterday telling her to look for good news.

Sorry- I meant to say "look for good news from richmond" not W&M. She does not expect to get int W&M.

My best friend got in! I am so happy for her. She is an IB student as well but with a 4.1 weighted gpa, 22 ACT and 1520/2400 SATs. I'm all for diversity, after all I am white and she is black but the huge disparity between our STATS cannot go unnoticed.

into w&m? with a 1520/2400? i don't really get that...seems impossible, especially w/ a 4.1 gpa. i have 4.1 as well--but i have a 2170 sat. granted, i am white, and i know they try to get minorities, but...

was that 1520 a typo?

also, i am really surprised, after looking at your stats again, that you did not get in, worldshopper. though i am kind of wondering about why i was waitlisted, i know there must be some reason (probably lack of super ec's, and a few transcript blemishes). you, however, seem to have been totally screwed over.

(sorry if i sound a bit annoying, but i am still a bit surprised/disappointed, and wonder about these big discrepancies.)

No typo, I swear.

Worldshopper, I am sorry to hear of your being waitlisted at W & M. I hope that you will write them and attempt to get off of the waitlist if you really want to go there! I admire you for trying to be completely honest regarding URM status - I do have to tell you that I know of several kids who are 1/16 minority and have used it to get all kinds of benefits. I do find that unethical - but in your case - 1/2 really isn't dishonest. Best of luck to you and congrats on the scholarship!

Thanks leadfooter. I'm just puzzled, that's all and I wouldn't be if I didn't see kids around me get in with lower STATS and lesser quality ECs. Obviously, W & M did not see me as a good fit for some reason. I also plan to major in Latin American Studies and W & M does not have a strong program for that -- so perhaps that was a red flag. Another problem might have been the fact that figure skating is one of my passions and Williamsburg does not have an ice rink. Maybe they thought I would not be happy there because I would not have access to a rink. I had made some posts a few months ago about this, inquiring if it would hinder my chances of getting accepted. Other than that, I like W & M but did apply to other schools that were stronger in Latin American Studies and that did also have an ice rink and/or school team (Princeton & Cornell). Of course, those schools are much harder to get into than W & M. William & Mary is a great school, but it's obviously not for me. I am sooooo glad my best friend got in though! BTW, I'm only 1/8 Mexican, not enough to contribute to diversity or anything.

From a previous post in December:

Will this hurt me?

My No. 1 Activity/Interest is NOT offered at 3 of the 4 schools to which I am applying RD. This activity is VERY important to me and I am obviously not thrilled about attending a school where this activity will not be available. Since important ECs/Passions are usually a vital component to one's happiness, will the schools assume that I am not a "good fit" for their school since they don't offer my No. 1 EC and my application will result in rejections?

Figure skating is my No. 1 passion, specifically synchronized skating.
Btw, I ended up applying to 5 schools total, 2 had skating teams, 2 had rinks in-town but no team and 1 school had neither (William & Mary).
