Surprised about Taft

jpw2325 That is not true because 2 people from my school are going to st. pauls, and three of us , including, me are going to governor’s academy.

Our son and another student in his class were admitted to Exeter.

It depends how big the school is, how many kids apply, and if they are qualified enough. Phillips Andover took 16 kids from my school’s 8th grade and one from 9th this year. Considering that there are less than 60 kids in my grade that’s a big number, even for a private school.

@Andover2016 - are they day students? If your school is local and has traditionally high performing students (especially if many are full pay) that may make a difference.

I spoke with admissions from Taft a while ago about 9th grade girls and was told there were over 400 applicants for 35 beds.

That number seems off to me. They take about 160 students each year, with 100 of them being 9th grade and about 50 for 10th. It doesn’t seem like the split is 65/35 boys/girls for 9th. But I could be wrong. One more thing to ask them when I’m there.

@ExieMITAlum Yes, my school is local and most of the kids are day students, some are full pay. It is still rare for us because for the last 10 years PA only took about 7 or 8 kids from my school each year.

He may have literally meant beds, not including the day students.

What percentage of Taft’s incoming ninth graders are girl day students, then?

@jpw2325 top prep schools absolutely take multiples from the same school, there are a lot of factors in play. At our school, for example, there are a lot of legacy candidates, and that means that when our placement director tells each student the specific schools they feel would be “best” for them, the number applying to any one school generally doesn’t exceed ten students (in our class of 55 people). Hotchkiss took 5 and only one is going, for example. Andover 3, Deerfield 4. Again, not everyone going. Two of those schools I just mentioned used to take many more, with not so great results, because the group of kids would go off to those boarding schools and be a little community of their own, once there. So for Andover2016 I could absolutely see that happening with their large group, especially if they are boarding students. Generally a class of 55/60 kids is incredibly tight anyway, so to take a chunk like that, I think, is really taking a risk of having a weird social situation at the next school, not just for them but for everyone. And FYI Taft took five students for tenth and at least one for ninth, including two of our best athlete (and best looking) boys this year.

So to clarify with the legacy thing I just mentioned, say seven kids had parents wi ties to the school, only three others without those ties would be allowed to apply.

hi, I just had a question to those who were waitlisted at taft;
has Taft taken comparably many people off its waiting list?

also does the addmistions office usually give you a notification call about there waitlist?
or do they just call applicants on the waitlist that they think have a chance?
or are you suppossed to call them first?
