besides for tufts syndrome (the concept where colleges waitlist/reject top applicants they know they wont attend), has anyone been rejected/waitlisted to certain schools and then gotten in a better one? are admissions decisions at schools that are similarly competitive usually the same?

i got waitlisted at BC, but am really hoping to get into some schools that are even slightly more competitive (likely, or will i most likely get rejected from these schools?)

There are a couple people (CareBear and myself included) I've seen that have been accepted to UCLA and rejected/waitlisted to Barnard and Wellesley.
