Concerned about student afety in area right outside Fordham- any information? Have heard that Fordham students are frequent targets. Thanks.

My S is a senior at Fordham. Hopefully a current student will post something but this is what I know…My S absolutely loves the location of Fordham RH. There are things to do in the Bronx (Arthur Ave. for great, reasonably priced Italian food, student bars, shopping, wonderful opportunities for community service work, Bronx Zoo, Botanical gardens and more) and there is also easy access to Manhattan. That said, it is an urban location and students at Fordham must have a level of “street smarts” – most of which is common sense – ex. go out with a group after dark etc. In general, the students who have trouble seem to be the ones who stumble around at 2AM alone and drunk. I have walked from the campus to Arthur Ave. and never felt unsafe. The campus itself is beautiful, gated, and very safe.

I should also say that the urban area surrounding Fordham may not be right for everyone. I would strongly suggest visiting the school (not just Fordham but any school you consider) to see for yourself. Maybe walk over to Arthur Avenue to get a feel for the surrounding area. Good luck.

As long as you don’t roam the streets alone in the middle of the night, you should be fine.

I used to live by fordahm. The actual area in it’s entirety is not bad, it’s actually pretty safe. You jut have take precautionary actions, you know no walk alone at 3 in the morning. But the general area is fine, plus there’s a ton of stuff to do from shopping, to entertainment. You have the Bronx zoo, botanical gardens, in uptown fordahm you have a market every summer with really cute things for sale and very cheaply. I hope you enjoy your time there. I used to visit like everyday I love it :)

Please tell us more about the “ton of stuff to do” in the area. The Botannical Gardens, the zoo and Arthur Avenue get mentioned a lot, but what else is there? I keep hoping that somebody will have found specific neighborhoods to visit, local places to eat or shop at or unique people to meet, but, so far, I keep hearing that for most of those sorts of things, RH students tend to go into Manhattan because it’s so convenient.
