Survey: Foreign Language Requirements

Which colleges require one or more years of language (or the ability to pass a language competency test) to graduate?

Just add to this list

Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Middlebury??
Trinity (CT)

Cornell Arts and Sciences but not the other schools at Cornell. (Actually, for many students it's only one semester, but you can't place out of it, even if you have AP credit. I think native speakers of another language are the only ones who can avoid taking a course.)

Northwestern CAS

Duke Universimjustadingtodukebecauseofthecharacterlimit

University of Tennessee

You have to complete an intermediate language sequence. At orientation you take a placement exam that tells them what level you should be in. If you test into the intermediate level, you are automatically given 6 hours of beginner language credit. Then all you have to do is complete the intermediate sequence.

Harvard, Yale, Duke, and Princeton all require 3 semesters I think depending on proficiency, and Penn Wharton also has a FL requirement though not sure what the specifics are

Columbia requires you be at least at the intermediate level of some foreign language. For some, this means two years of instruction, for others none as they were waived via APs.

Michigan LS&A requires 4 semesters

W&M is 4 semesters
UVA is 4 semesters (I think)
