Maybe there should really be two lists.

There are many colleges that require foreign language for graduation, but the majority of them allow students to complete the requirement before they enroll. In other words, if you score high enough on the AP exam, the SAT Subject Test, or the college's own placement exam, no more foreign language study is necessary.

On the other hand, there are a few schools that not only have a foreign language requirement but also require you to study foreign language in college, even if you have AP credit. A high AP score will allow you to place into a more advanced language course, but you still have to take one or more courses. The three I know of in this category are Yale, Duke (Arts and Sciences only), and Cornell (Arts and Sciences only).

OK , wo lists:

At some schools it depends on the major. For instance, at USC Computer Science majors must have some foreign language credit to graduate, but Computer Engineering majors don't. (It could be the other way around)

UW - Madison requires FL for the College of Letters and Science. The kind of cool thing they do is that you can earn retroactive credit for FL classes you took in high school. To earn these, you take the college FL placement course, take the course you are placed in and earn a grade of B or better. Then they give you credit for all the preceding classes as if you had taken them at UW. I think that students can earn up to 12 retro credits plus the 4 credits for the course they take. It is a better deal than AP credits because they don't charge you anything and you can earn many more credits.
