Suspended in HS- Now what?

I have a friend who got suspended in HS- once for drugs, once for doing something stupid. No arrest. Are there specific schools that don't ask about suspensions? I believe they do on the common app. Thanks.

He will have to address it in his application one way or another, even if the university does not ask specifically because his school transcripts will indicate that he has been suspended.

I don’t think most numbers based public schools ask about suspensions. I know the CSUs didn’t. PM MomofWildChild. I believe her kid was suspended and ended up getting into UPenn, so it’s not entirely without hope.

Alexandre:
No criticism, but not all transcripts from all schools have a place that indictes suspensions. The one from my school does not shows suspensions. I might be wrong, but for some schools, applicants can choose to keep their mouth shut about their suspensions, since If the colleges (usually public) can access to their records, then they have to tell the truth.

OP:
But one or two shouldn’t hurt. OP, it should not be a big concern. Many people from my school does not have a clean record and they are accepted to decent colleges.

Don’t count on numbers based schools not asking this question. It is not only the more competitive or elite universities that want to know. This is a matter of security in this day in age. School’s are requiring reporting of all students and they will decide what is worth worrying about. They have to maintain a level of safety for thousands of other students and faculty on their campus. This is what Virginia Tech (known for stats based admissions) now requires and I don’t think there’s a person anywhere that questions why.

This doesn’t mean checking ‘yes’ in any of these boxes means an automatic denial. It means please explain further and let us (ie the university) determine any potential problems with academic integrity or other threats.

I was referring to schools which have no application essays and people are accepted based on a formula, like the Cal States (excluding Maritime and SLO), University of Kansas, UWyo, etc

My school doesn’t include your disciplinary record as part of our transcripts, however, I was asked on all of my application (including the common app) if i had ever been suspended and I had to answer yes regardless. My suspension wasn’t too serious just for drinking and I wrote a short explanation with my applications and I still got into all the colleges I applied to so don’t base where you apply on just that. It really doesn’t make a big difference unless it was involving violence or academic dishonesty.

you are better off telling the truth.

they will give a place to explain, if they do ask the question. If it’s something violent towards others, I think that is looked at as a red flag.

Good luck to your “freind.”
