Hey,

Last year (in 10th grade), I was suspended for programming a "harassing" Flash MX video, and hosting it on my own servers. Will this look bad on my MIT app.?

Come on...

What do you mean by "harassing"?

Alright, it was a Flash MX video, that portrayed a classmate breaking up with another classmate. That is all. The school is only writing "Programmed a harassing video and hosted it on his own server" in my report.

give us the link

I don't have it anymore because the school made me take it down. I just want to know if "Alex created a harassing video for some other kids and hosted it on his own server" will look bad for MIT?

send an additional paragraph or two explaining what it really was, it doesn't sound that bad, maybe even make a page for it on your site and don't tell anyone you know and include that in what you send them so they can see it if they want to, but definately explain it

how did they know it was you, did you put your name on the site or something?

The two kids that wanted me to do it (I was the only one who had a website) told everyone that it was my site. I really didn't care about it at the time, I am just concerned because I am applying to MIT for 2006.

write an essay explaining the circumstances and how you learned from the experience. you should be fine assuming your grades, SAT scores, & EC's are good.

Alright. The high school send a very vague report, and the explanation is left to me. That being said, is there any way that I can play it up and actually make it look good for my app.? (Since it has to do with programming websites).

the only question i really have is why were u suspended? what is the schools involvement in this? not their servers...not on school time?

Don't lie. Do say yes on your app regarding suspension but explain lessons learned...

Hahaha. It's sort of like my school, where the counselors go around people's xangas and suspend any offensive topics. pshh

which is ridiculous because the school has no involvement in matters relating to the internet outside of school and off school servers. you can actually sue the district if they suspend you for something like that...1st amendment rights

it looks bad alright, but the reason for suspension is not awful.. if u got suspended for drugs or fighting or something it would look bad, but its not that case at all

Yes, we tried to fight the suspension, but they said we would need to get a lawyer and it would be $2500, just for a Flash video. So I just accepted suspension. My own server too...

I hope you know that you don't actually program a flash video... maybe other things with their javascript "actionscript" but not a video... Please do not try to play it up as a good thing (I suppose its not too impressive to make a flash video, I did one for a US history project). Please do explain the situation and write about the lessons you have learned from your experience.

Thanks for your input, but I actually did program it. It wasn't just a movie, it was interactive with the user. Also, I had to program a file in Perl for the cgi-bin, so the users could add info. Not trying to play it up, just wondering if it will look bad on my app.

Slant it to your advantage.

Use it to exemplify your amateur mastery of programming.
