Hi i was suspended in my 9th grade year for cutting class and going to another lunch when a boy took my phone and put it in the boys bathroom and i went in and got it but i was in a charter school and in my 10th grade year i switch to a public school is there anyway colleges will se that suspension on my record.
You and your parents should go talk to the principal of the first school and ask them if there is a way you can keep it off your record.
Kids make mistakes all the time - it shouldn’t doom your future.
Maybe it even shows a little character - but don’t do it again!
You should request an “unofficial” (ie unsealed) copy of your transcript from that school, to see how it appears. If your sophomore and junior records are clean it shouldn’t be a problem. As described, it sounds like adolescent impulsiveness and not the cause for ongoing concern that academic dishonesty, violent behavior, or substance abuse would be.
While the above advice about asking the first school is valid, even if the suspension does show on your transcript, the thing you should know is: colleges will not care!!!
When a college is asking about discipline issues, they are primarily concerned with major violations like academic dishonesty, drug dealing, and bullying. Minor infractions such as cutting class, unauthorized use of a cell, smoking behind the dumpster are chalked up to youthful transgressions.
If your suspension appears on your record, you will need to address it on your application. Do not go into a long explanation; explain the transgression and that you learned from your mistake, and move on. If the suspension does not appear on your record or the GC recommendation, there is no reason to even mention it.
One of my son’s friends was suspended for possession and potential dealing of marijuana his freshman year, but he rebounded after that, did OK academically (not as well as you), and is going away to a 4-yr college. As skieurope said you just need to explain it without being overly dramatic about it. It happens to a lot of kids, and colleges understand that adolescents make mistakes.
if it helps you any–I am looking at an “official” unofficial transcript and there isn’t even a spot on their for absences, let alone suspensions. its only unofficial because it was an unsealed copy and there is no school seal on it-i’m presuming its an exact copy of the actual document.
I really wouldn’t worry.
