Suspension

Just wondering, how much will a suspension hurt my chances of getting into college?

in school or out of school, and why did it happen?

Not much if any. If your school doesn't put suspensions on your transcript (most don't), colleges don't generally ask. They ask about expulsions and dropping out, but not suspensions.

although many colleges don't ask about minor situations

I know a guy who got busted in high school for smoking weed on the marching band bus. This resulted in a 45 day suspension (and a ton of taunting when he got back--we all wore DARE shirts that day). He got into college without a problem, but his SAT scores were pretty decent.

He wound up dropping out of college one year later.

they suspend kids for 45 days for stuff like that?
the only major suspension we've ever had was when someone brought a fake gun into school

In my district, suspensions longer than 19 days don't exist. If you want someone gone longer, it is called an expulsion and it is a one-year suspension.

I was suspended 3 times: 5th grade, 8th grade, 12th grade. My 12th grade suspension was after I was already accepted into my schools. They never asked about anything pre-9th grade on the applications.

I wrote about a suspension I had in 10th grade and had no problems getting into top schools (although I'm sure one of my two rejections was due to it...). You never know who's reading your application, and it just depends on who's reading it. Just be honest if they ask you...

Whether the colleges' admissions committees consider your suspension obviously depends on what your suspension was for--academic dishonesty will obviously be more important to them than accumulating to many late-back-from-lunch tardies. Smoking a cigarette on school property will carry less weight than drugs or alcohol or fighting or bringing a weapon to school.

My suspension was for academic dishonesty, so it's best to write about how you have reformed, if you have...

I thought the smoker should have been expelled. I don't know how he got away with only 45 days, but that punishment was bull in my opinion. It didn't teach him anything--he's still smoking like a chimney.

You do realize that marijuana is, realistically speaking, an almost legal and very culturally accepted drug in the US, right?

45 days for smoking bud? good god. That's way too harsh. That's longer than you get for fighting, which in my opinion is a lot worse than smoking a little pot.

I got suspended once in the 4th or 5th grade for fighting. In another school district nonetheless, several thousand miles from this one. For 1 day.

Do I mention this on an application question that says "for an extended period of time"?

I should hope not.

"45 days for smoking bud? good god. That's way too harsh."
well in most countries you'd get arrested for that. just possession of marijuana can get you a 2year sentence in bulgaria...
it always surprises me how in the states pot is more tolerated than alcohol and even tobacco. weird.

Do you know how many people a year die from tobacco or alcohol-related causes? (A lot)
Do you know how many die from marijuana? (None)

Wait, you really think that no one dies from marijuana? That's one of the most ignorant statements ever. Do you have any idea how many people die in car accidents under the influence of marijuana? Let me give you a hint: It's more than none.

ACCORDING TO THE U.S. CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL:
