Sutherland Hall?

As a freshman, would it be an option to live in Sutherland Hall? If so, how does it compare with the towers or holland hall? Thanks!

I’m a prospective freshman, too, and I’ll also probably be living in Sutherland, on the honor(s) floor. It’s mostly made up of either honors kids or student athletes from what I heard. How it compares: Well it’s a little far away from the Towers and Holland, which are literally in the very center of campus. It’s supposedly “soo far up the hill,” but I didn’t think it was that bad from visiting, plus there’s a place to eat and gym right there. As far as reputation, Towers is the party dorm, all freshmen. Holland is girls-only, with some singles, and so known as more quieter or “lame” or whatever, but I’ve heard that there are a lot of girls who want to be in Towers who end up living there, so I’d imagine it still be fun.

There are two Sutherland buildings (east and west). It appears that one building will be honors housing starting in the fall, but I do not know whether it will be the entire building or not. In the past, lots of freshmen lived in Sutherland. Sutherland also usually houses athletes because of its proximity to the facilities.

There are buses that circulate up and down the hill and around campus from Sutherland, so its distance from the lower campus is minimized. When my daughter found out that she would live in Sutherland her first year, she said: “I am going to have great calves.”

I know nothing about Holland. However, my daughter has lived in both Sutherland and Towers C (single room for summer session). Sutherland is set up mostly as suites. It has dining facilities in the complex as does the Towers. The rooms are probably a bit bigger in Sutherland and the suites share a bathroom or two that the suitemates clean. The Towers have common bathrooms that are cleaned professionally.

The Towers do seem to be the center of activity, but it depends on what you like to do. There are also specific floors in the Towers (like SPACE) that are designated for students studying similar things.

Your question was a bit open-ended, OP.

You probably decided already, but I lived in Sutherland East last year. Though you’re high up on the hill, the shuttles come every 15 min., and you get used to the walk up. I liked having a semi-private bathroom as well. The rooms are gigantic compared to towers, and Holland (holland had weird shaped rooms), and the Perch, although sometimes horrible, is just downstairs. All the freshmen athletes live there, which is pretty cool. And, towers isn’t the party dorm – never even heard of that. Sutherland suites had parties, but since upper campus has the on campus frats, people just went there.

All in all, if you don’t mind walking, then choose sutherland. if you want a pie shaped room, then choose the towers.

One last thing – if you want to go to the gym a lot, most facilities are on upper campus. And, another thing – towers laundry is very hectic (you have to leave your tower to go to the common area, where the laundry room is). In sutherland, your laundryroom is inside the security doors. One last thing (I promise). The computer lab is right outside of the security doors, so printing is easy.

Hope that helps.

The west wing will probably be honors and the east everyone else. We got a tour of Sutherland yesterday and it looked quite nice and more spacious than the other dorms we saw. I don’t know the chances of getting into it as a non-honors freshman but because it’s away from lower campus, maybe it won’t be as popular.

False… .

yeah i’m with arachnophobia12 on this one… towers (especially tower b) is the party dorm. sutherland definitely has some “party people,” but they usually go out and don’t really party in the actual dorm. and this coming year sutherland is going to be honors kids and athletes so if there are any parties, it will be pretty minimal.

My bad. I never knew anyone had parties down there. Yeah, people there like to party, but I didn’t think it was the party hub. Guess I know now.
