Sutherland Hall

Okay so I originally wanted to stay in Forbes but I really really erally didn't like the area around there. My second choice is sutherland and it seems pretty good: the building is AMAZING and so is the area around it, and it has a lot of facilities in and around it.
However my question is whether or not the walk from Sutherland to pre-med classes is extremely tedious or not? And is the wait for the shuttle really long as well? Also, does Sutherland have a lot of jocks? It is the second Honors dorm building...

Hello,

I live in PA Hall now, very close to your building. I like Upper Campus because it is much more quiet then lower campus and there is easier access to the gym's / pool / racquetball courts. On game day, its a 2 second walk to the pete, which I enjoy.

Why are you worried about jocks? The dorm is big, so youre bound to meet people.

Your main premed classes will be in Chevron and Clapp. This is not a long walk, but going back up "cardiac" hill is a pain. The bus is convenient, and most students walk down the hill and take the bus back up. The bus ride is 5 or 10 minutes at most.

The only thing that sucks about sutherland is the food.

Gahaha the reason I'm worried bout them is because i highly doubt i'll get along with any of the jocks, although it would be a different experience to stay with one i guess. I really don't mind walking up the hill, seeing the other benefits of the building. I'd probably be more scared walking DOWN it in the snow and ice.

And hey, is Sutherland first years only or a mix?

As a parent, at first I wasn't wild about the location of Forbes but it really does grow on you. The students who live there seem to have no problem with the location. I take it that you didn't like that it is right on the main drag if you will.

What do you mean by Sutherland being the second honors dorm? After MUCH discussion on this board last year surrounding honors housing for freshmen I was pretty sure that Forbes was the oly one for incoming freshmen. Have they expanded liek we wanted them to?

upper campus (sutherland hall, pa hall and all that) is not many first year kids...ef upper campus u wanna be in the towers so u can meet some peeps.

Ohhhhhh maybe your right bluejay maybe forbes is the honors for freshman, but according to this housing brochure thinger that came, sutherland is an honors dorm. idk maybe its only for upperclasssmen? idk how this stuff works but i think i will stay in sutherland :]

Those are my two choices too. I don't know much on the pros and cons, but I liked Forbes for honors and Sutherland for the international LLC. That's good to know that it's more upperclass, though.

How close are they to the Cathedral of Learning?

Chrys are you going to be a freshman this fall? I'm honestly confused as hell lol. The booklet we got says one thing and the website says another. For example, Bruce Hall in the booklet is first years only/mostlly and on the website, its upperclassmen only.
And Chrys, Sutherland is pretty far (relatively speaking of course lol) from CoL. Thats the only sad part about Sutherland, everything else is PERFECT about the hall.

I called the housing people (Panther Central I suppose) and they said that Bruce Hall is freshmen only this year and wehther or not Sutherland Hall will have honors housing this year is up in the air (I guess because maybe a lot of honors freshmen last year got rejected they're making room for more). They're gonna base it on how many honors kids apply I guess. Also, it will be freshmen only this year.
Well, seems like Sutherlands the one for me :D

That's good, although that stinks that it's far from CoL. I'm guessing that's where a lot of my classes will be (for Linguistics). Although maybe that won't matter so much the first year since I'll be taking more general requirements.

Did anyone who received housing information send in anything other than the enrollment fee? I am trying to figure out what I have to do, since I only paid the enrollment fee at the accepted students day.

Bruce Hall was pretty nice. It is made up of suites and the one my son stayed in had two fairly large bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room area and kitchen area with a small table inbetween. It was super convenient and really quiet (old building with thick walls). The only down side was that there is no air-conditioning so you need fans for several weeks. Also, I thought it was a little dark, so you would need some extra lamps in all of the rooms. You simply can't beat the location though.

I really don't understand why, but Pitt keeps moving the honors housing around. In the past three years, it has been in the Towers, Sutherland, McCormick, Forbes-Craig, and Forbes. They never used to have enough for freshmen and even less in subsequent years, so maybe they are going to remedy that.

yeah i think a lot of freshman wanted honors dorms last year most probably and i think 230 some wasn't good enough. sutherland has more dorms so perhaps that will fix the problem
bruce does look good! i wanna stay in a suite most likely (how cool would that be!!!) so i would've picked bruce hall but my parents want me to stay in honors dorms first year :\
cant argue with them...they're paying the housing fees!!
