SVA/NYU/PRATT etc.

Hey! I am interested in pursuing a career in photography. I'm currently a sophomore in high school and have been working to gain any knowledge about art schools, mainly around the New York area. I love the city but have not been able to visit any schools as of now. I know I have time to plan but I'd really like to get started as soon as possible to ensure I reach my full potential by the time I begin filling out applications.

I'll leave a list of my stats and a link to my flickr with all my pictures. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I know the schools I've listed are hard to get into so if you have any other opinions please let me know!

Most recent stats:
10 grade
All "Pre-AP" (honors) classes, except for math.
3.4 GPA (unweighted)
Ranked top half: number 138/332 (I go to a very competitive school)

Extra curricular: 2 years of cross country running, sophomore class vice president, One Act Theater Production (you have to audition), member of film talk club, member of FCCLA, 60+ volunteer hours.

I am currently taking my first photography class at school (you have to take an "Art 1" class freshman year) and have recently been invited to take an AP Photography class as a junior based off of teacher approval.

I hope this doesn't come off as too braggy, because that is not what I intended at all! I'm just hoping for some reliable feedback. :)

Thanks so much in advance!

I adore your portfolio. Especially since it’s all photography ; + your only a sophomore.
You seem to be advanced beyond some of your peers and upper class-men because it seems like your knowledge and conception of photography is well understood.
Some of the pictures look like photos shared on Tumblr with that vintage look which I love personally.
[ hypothetically speaking, you could probably get into some schools with those photos alone ]

Although I didn’t apply for photography as major, I know that what colleges look for is that in your portfolio, your photographs should be less based on Photoshop editing and more of actual shots.

I don’t think you should go to NYU(Tisch). It’s the best choice to go on with photography as a major. Since Tisch is really more known for theater. Unless you want to go NYU because of their outstanding academic scene. Go for it. [NYU is by far the competitive school in the US] and also judging by your GPA and classes (sofarsinceyoursophomore) it’s really slim to be accepted. But I do think you have potential in getting in. You seem to be a very bright student with your extra curricular activities. Until when you take your SAT/ACT, your ESSAY, boost your GPA and whatever else you plan to do in your high school career… that will matter if you do get accepted or not.

Pratt and SVA are to me equally the same. Pratt is in Brooklyn tho and SVA is in NYC.
Can’t speak for those schools since I don’t know much about them even though I got accepted to those schools… [GO RESEARCH and VISIT some day]

keep up the good work.
best photography portfolio I’ve seen yet.

I think it is great that you are so motivated to figure out what you want to do so early, and the fact that you will be taking AP Photography so early is wonderful. One suggestion I might have at this point is to not pay so much attention to what those schools are like (as what you may want from a school could really change between now and middle of your senior year), but to focus on what those schools and other fine photography programs (look at any top ranked schools for this) will want to see from you. So, review what is required in the portfolio for each school (for example, will the school accept only photography or will they want drawing from life too), see what type of grade requirements there are, etc. Then focus on doing those things that make you more desirable to those schools.

You should also look into going to a National Portfolio Day this spring or next fall (when most of them are). Use the experience there to seek out the schools in which you have interest, but also to get reviews from other places as well. You will get great feedback and may find other schools that interest you. NPDs are held all over the country, just google and go to their website. Hope this helps. I wish you luck!

Thank you both! goodfornothin, what school did you end up going to?

I got accepted to MICA and all sorts of schools around the US. But I’m choosing to go to SVA in NYC. I really really wanted to go to Parsons. That’s the only reason why I created this account to post something in the Parsons thread. Just like you want, I prefer going to a school in NYC. I seek that as an opportunity and living a new life. I’m just waiting for my Financial Aid which was suppose to come around March 1st…

SVA seems like a very good school! You should be proud of yourself regardless of whether or not it was your first choice  Any other advice anyone?

Just a note: Pratt is in NYC as well, in the borough of Brooklyn.

SVA has a very good art program. My daughter just got in their for their MFA Computer Art program. Congrats goodfornothin.
