I recently was admitted to SVA and RISD for the fall term of 2007 and am not sure which to attend. I was accepted into undergrad Animation in SVA and the Illustration in RISD. I was wondering if anyone has any info about how good these schools are. My interests lie in computer art, animation, and illustration.

Right now I'm leaning towards SVA because it is much cheaper and is located in NYC. But then again at the same time I hear a lot about RISD's prestige. Problem with RISD is I wouldnt really be thrilled to live in Providence, RI.

I dont really know much about SVA though, I visited the campus and spoke to a counselor, thats about it.

Oh. If anyone also has any good animation / computer art art schools in California that would be great too!

SVA and RISD are VERY different schools and it is challenging to compare them. Both are wonderful and have their strengths, however, they offer very different experiences and approaches to art.

My son was accepted to both schools and after several visits, he was able to make the decision that seemed to fit him best - - based on the philosophy of the school, course offerings, feel of the school and students attending, etc. If there is any way to visit both, I would strongly encourage you to do that.

(BTW, when we added up all the anticipated expenses of both schools, there was not as large a difference in cost. Make sure you compare the total cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses. We found the difference to be quite small over the expected 4 years.)

California Institute of Art (or CalArts, not sure if i got the actual name right) has a distinguished program in traditional animation. other than that, look at Academy of Art in SF and Art Center. I only know those are good art schools, dunno how they compare to each other and to other top animation schools like Ringling.

Could you be more specific in how SVA and RISD are different. My daughter did presummer (cartooning) at SVA last month. We have not yet visited RISD. She thinks she would like to major in illustration, take animation courses and one day work in character design. Her interests are definately more commercial than fine art. Thanks.

At RISD, you must choose your major at the end of your freshman year. Not alot of opportunities to cross over into other majors. From what I've seen at RISD (D will be a senior this year), if you are interested in animation check out other art schools. Check out Ringling... www.ringling.edu They have a very good reputation in the animation. Sarasota is beautiful, but it's not NYC.
