I know that I will need everything on the list, and pretty much nothing else. However, can I bring sunglasses? And what about stationary to write home (pre-addressed and stuff)? My parents are wondering if the Academy posts pictures from throughout the summer on their website. I know there is a section in the parents website, but that just seems to be the Eagle and R-Day mostly. They are wondering about the daily life stuff. My mom is pretty sure I'm going to be kicked out right away because I "can't keep my room clean" ;), should be interesting. Also, does anyone have any tips or little tid-bits I should know? Thanks for any help you have to offer.

I don't know how it is for CGA but there was a whole discussion on the USNA site about plebes/swabs not being allowed to wear sunglasses. As for keeping your room clean - I have a friend who graduated from CGA and he said he didn't keep his room clean at home until after he got married. I hope some Coasties get on here and help with your questions. Best of luck!

You can bring sunglasses with you. They could not be mirrored, and that the eyes had to be visible through the coloring of the lenses. If in doubt bring an inexpensive pair. The worst they could do is take them away from you during swab summer.

As far as pictures, the Academy does take some during swab summer but for the most part the pictures are ones taken on R-day, at the flag ceremony and the ceremony where you get your shoulder boards. Parents will post them frequently. Sometimes parents go to religious services during swab summer and take pictures of the kids afterwards having donuts etc.

You can bring stationery. A good idea is to bring pre-addressed plain post cards. You can quickly jot down a note to your parents or friends. You don't have much time and you are tired most of the time so this works well.

Don't worry about your lack of tidiness. My son was the same way but you learn fast to keep your room clean. It's part of the process. Good luck...it's getting closer!

Also your parents should join the listserv for 2010 if they haven't already since a lot of these questions come up there and are answered.

Best advice for swab summer, when things are getting bad, remember:

"They can't stop time...and they can't kill you." This applies to all the academies!

My parents did join the listserv, it seems to be helping them a lot! Great advice, I'm sure I will be coming to you with more questions as R-Day approaches.
