How easy is it to swap majors after you've been accepted? I would ideally want to switch before the first semester, but I understand that's no longer possible for UIUC once 1/12/11 (or something like that) passes.

I was admitted to my alternate choice (Electrical Engineering instead of Aerospace), but given how much I've enjoyed my CS related classes this year, I was hoping to change my major to that. Both majors are in the School of Engineering, so how hard would you think it would be to switch into CS from EE?

sorry i dont have an answer for you but i wana tag onto it, i got accepted into the liberal arts and science school today, my first choice but now i want to do engineering, hows that tranfer compare to your situation

Transfering between majors within the engineering college is usually not that difficult as long as college grades are good but won’t be allowed before first semester and likely not until after first year.

As to the second poster I have already answered that on your post. Transfering between colleges is more difficult than switching majors within engineering college.

Would I still be allowed to take the CS courses during my first year? I looked at the first year suggested course line up and they are very similar, but I wouldn’t want to get behind in CS related topics if that’s my ultimate goal.

The courses I’m referencing are CS 100 (Freshman Orientation in Computer Science), CS125 Intro to CS, and CS 173 Discrete Structures.

No you would not take that freshman orientation course but it is not needed for switching majors. Each major has its own orientation progam, you take the one for the major you are admitted to and it is just generally orientation to engineering with a little emphasis on one you are in but you won’t be missing anything by not being in the other one.

Yes, you could take CS125 and CS 173 freshman year as long as you can fit them in schedule (such as instead of taking an elective in humanities for one semester)

So, just to clarify, I could realistically take the CS classes in addition to my Electrical Engineering course load, and then I could potentially transfer at the end of the year?

Would you recommend maybe ignoring some of my EE requirements and replacing them with CS requirements, or do you feel as though that could screw me in the long run?

I’m just trying to get an idea of my options here. If the process is too elaborate and too risky, I may just select a school with a more favorable major changing situation, but I want to fully understand my options at UIUC because of the quality of the CS program.
