gregish, I know that Swarthmore encourages people to try to get interviews. It would have been a lot better if you had tried to schedule an interview as soon as possible, and I don't understand why you missed the deadline (and why you still haven't done anything about it) if you REALLY want to have an interview. There's nothing wrong with sending out an e-mail and asking if there are still opportunities to have an interview, but don't count on it. I don't think it'll hurt your chances. But if you e-mail them, don't say something like, "I REALLY want to have an interview for Swarthmore," because the natural response is, "Well, then, why didn't you schedule one when you were supposed to?"

right, I understand. That's why I'm hesitant to send them an email. Somehow I was so focused on everything else (essays, etc.) that the interview thing got lost. Yesterday when I realized there were deadlines I went crazy trying to contact all 10 of my schools. It looks like I'll be OK with most of them, except Pomona and Swarthmore.

My counselor is going to get in touch with parents of a graduate from my high school who are Swarthmore alumni to see if one would do an interview. Although, I'm not sure if they're even official interviewers and if Swarthmore would accept one this late. Hopefully my Why Swarthmore essay will express my interest enough.

Interviews are important but if you missed the deadline, don't worry. My son did not get an interview (missed deadline) and still got in (this was in 2004).

I requested an interview and got a response a few days ago with an alum's contact info. But my aunt just passed away and I think if I did go to the interview I'd be a total wreck. Would it look bad if I decide not to have an interview at all?

Not at all. They'll understand if you tell them that there was a death in the family. Make sure you contact the interviewer.

The other thing you could do is ask the interviewer to schedule the interview after the holidays.

Then, midway through, she flat out told me that I smiled too much, I was too enthusiastic, and that I wasn't able to criticize things. I thought this was a bit out of line, considering I find myself to for the most part modest and respectful, if not opinionated. Then she kept asking me to elaborate on my experience at Harvard SSP two summers ago, and to find negative aspects of it. I had a great experience- the only negative I could seriously think about was that the food in Annenburg got old after a while. Anyways, not a good interview, especially considering my other two had been decent.

That seems kind of ridiculous. Have you looked into the possibility of getting another interview?

Why would she want another interview? She's a junior at Wellesley by now. Besides, I think her father may have requested another interview when he called the admissions office and ripped 'em a new one because his daughter wasn't pleased with the Swarthmore alumni interviewer.

Oh, I see we're dealing with a necromanced thread.

I think that only getting an A- in a Harvard course killed any chances for getting into Swarthmore.
