Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9-10. Essay was a reflection on how my self worth came to be dependent on what the commune I work at thought of me, how this became a problem, what I learned etc. I would say it was a pretty good essay and covered the difficult topic of getting rejected form something w/ Quakerism and my values and stuff which was good for swat
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I am very close to several teachers, and provided one extra rec to go with my arts supplement.

Teacher Rec #1: English (strongest subject, very close to teacher)
Teacher Rec #2: AP Biology (favorite class, not super close to teacher)
Teacher Rec #3: Art teacher (she loves me, I was her best student for 3 years)
Counselor Rec: Many extracurriculars to talk about
Additional Rec:
Interview: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: I wrote undecided because the intended major is not strongest subject, which puts applicant at disadvantage. But I intend to study bio of enviro. Always put that your intended major is your strongest subject (this is advice directly from the coach who wanted me in)
State (if domestic applicant): NC
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public (very rigorous)
Ethnicity: caucasian
Gender: female
Income Bracket: middle middle class lol
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Quaker background

Reflection

Strengths: Very well rounded, challenging courses, athletics, elected in student government, president of feminism club, interest in social justice, decent test scores, excellent extracurriculars and probably solid recs.
Weaknesses: low GPA and class rank, no summer experience
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was accepted because I met the test score requirements, was very well rounded with good essays and had the support of the coach.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: N/A

General Comments :
**** -I am a stud athlete, meaning I would not have gotten in without the support of my recruiter at Swarthmore. A big part of the difference in the acceptance rates in ED vs. RD is that all the athletes who have been recruited and sorta know that they are going to get in (because the coaches show our info to admissions way in advance to see whether or not we will make it) apply ED.

-I submitted an arts supplement which was very strong, and an additional rec to go with it

@lilly8price Congrats. What sport?

^About recruitment, it’s not totally true that athletes “know they are going to get in.” I was recruited for track, and all the coach said was that he’d support me in the admissions process, but my acceptance was almost completely based on my actual application. Basically, you must have gotten in ED because you really, really, really wanted to go to Swat and it showed in your application!! Congrats

@Liily8price and @strawberry3 I think you sound great but i think its okay to acknowledge that being a student athlete definitely gives you an advantage over non athletes so i thank you for putting that in your reflection. Just like URM ,athletes def. have an advantage in getting into college and thats okay to acknowledge that. Not to acknowledge that is not really being honest about the college admission process. Just to say, " I think it came down to just showing you really, really really wanted to get into Swat." is not accurate. plenty of kids did that and did not get in with amazing stats and extracurriculars,. perhaps because they didnt have the hook of being an athlete or URM or legacy. Thank you again for acknowledging that being a student athlete gives you a “leg up” in the admissions process.

I def. understand the time that athletes put into their sport and that colleges recognize that time and also understand that having sports at a college is important .

xc and track

for those reading the thread in the future def. possible to get into Swarthmore after getting deferred in the ED pool. S just found out the good news. at least one other poster in the RD thread also in after getting deferred ED. Yeaaa.

Having going through the admission process I can see being an athlete significantly improves your chances of acceptance. I meet the criteria for most aspects for Swarthmore, but had terrible ACT/SAT scores (1790/27). But thanks to the push from the coach and lots of prayer I was still able to be admitted.

I just wanted to share so when future seniors look at this thread they can have some home
