Swarthmore hotels?

Coming to interview on Monday Oct. 5th. Need hotel recommendations. The cheaper the better! Thanks!

There are no hotels in Swarthmore itself, although there are a couple of B&Bs. Closest hotel we’ve used is the Day’s Inn on Baltimore Pike in Springfield (formerly a Howard Johnson’s). You’ll need a car to get there and back and forth to campus. Other possibilities are any hotel near the airport. The airport hotels (especially those south of the airport itself) are not too far from Swarthmore. Again, car or taxi is the only practical way to get back and forth to campus. Another possibilitiy would be to stay in the city of Philadelphia and take the SEPTA regional rail out to Swarthmore. The train station is just at the foot of campus, an easy walk up to Parrish Hall where admissions is located.

Unless it’s fall break, you should stay with a student in the dorm. If your folks are with you, then what used to be the Howard Johnson’s on Baltimore Pike has always been a good choice for us. It’s only about a mile and a half from campus. If you are in a bind, there’s a city bus route that runs up and down the Baltimore Pike and goes right through the Swarthmore campus on Chester Road.

I highly recommend the Purcell Darrell House. It is a B&B across the street from the campus.

While it isn’t as inexpensive as a Day’s Inn, the accomodations are very comfortable and it is an easy walk to the campus or to the town of Swarthmore. It is possible to get there from the airport by train, although you would need to change trains in Philadelphia. But that way you would save money on taxi’s to offset the higher price of the B&B.

My D and I stayed there while touring colleges last winter and had an excellent experience. My D went back to Swarthmore for an overnight visit in the dorms but due to difficult plane connections she had to stay an additional night at the B&B. They took very good care of her.

Thanks to all! Very helpful!
