Our child was waitlisted as well. With many students applying to more than the usual amount of colleges, the amount of students matriculating in fall 2021 is finite and each student can’t accept more than one spot if they are holding multiple acceptances. Colleges will be using the waist list to fill in the gaps. As for how deep a waist list is, only the particular college knows.
Good luck to all who choose to remain on waitlist, congrats to those admitted and best of luck to those who did not get in. You will find your perfect place!

So RD round is to choose about 200 from 12000 applicants?
My son was accepted. For us it is hard because he has a full ride offer from Fordham LC with a stipend and this school is very expensive in comparison. He is also competing for full rides with 2 other state schools. He wants to go to medical school so not sure we can justify the undergraduate debt. Waiting for a couple of other schools and then will make final decision. If you were to ask me why I think he got in I would say he is very well rounded. Has pretty great stats and is an excellent writer.

I was accepted this morning in Beijing Time! It’s really a big surprise for me as I was deferred during the ED2. I believed the updated letters does work. I am going to study sociology and mathematics so Swarthmore is almost the perfect decision for me.

I would take the full ride esp if he plans to go to med school.

Write an email to Swarthmore explaining that your son was accepted with a full ride to Fordham but that Swarthmore is your first choice. Explain that Swarthmore is not affordable for your family right now due to A, B, C and D reasons. Ask if there’s anything they can do to help get him there. You’d be surprised how an email like that can help your situation. What do you have to lose?

In my humble opinion, LAC rank 3 is not comparable to National University rank 66. I can boldly bet that Swarthmore won’t match a full-ride to Fordham.
@sparkleybarkley No matter what I guess, good luck to you!

Don’t you think they might want to hang on to this student though? Not sure…
I think it’s certainly worth an open conversation with them. All they can do is say no, and no one is saying they have to “match” the same offer.
So my kid was admitted but a terrible financial aid package. He’s been admitted to two other highly regarded schools, and we got same offers to each. I did the NPC on all schools, and consistently got the same estimates for all. The weird thing is they said we can pay the same amount the other two schools are giving. I really feel compelled to see if they
Will reevaluate.

I just think that if cost is a huge factor for your family, then you haven’t lost anything by asking if anything can be done. If you don’t write them explaining the situation, nothing will happen.
Agree, communication cannot make it worse and never hurt to try.
My assumption is based on another topic regarding financial aid/scholarship appealing. It is said better to have comparison between 2 colleges in the same tier (close rank) and I am kind of agreeing to it.

Agree with the “more leverage with same tier school” thing, but it could also be that they might really want this kid. We just don’t know, so I’d go for it and ask.
I’d be pulling out all the stops to get to where I wanted to go. That’s just me. If it doesn’t work, you haven’t lost anything either.

One of the schools was a top ten LAC.

Hi all! I was admitted Congrats to everyone on your accomplishments, regardless of your decision!
For those of you who were admitted RD, have you been able to see your financial aid package? I can’t find it anywhere :,(

They accept more than that and expect a certain percent to enroll based on past years’ average yield. Were 200 accepted ED? So they would have accepted however many students so 41 % enroll to fill the remaining openings to fill a typical class of 400 or so. Swarthmore typically keeps stats quiet until Common Data set is released. I haven’t seen stats readily avail like many other top tier schools.
They can waitlist sometimes double what they accepted. The actual list will not be determined until students “accept” a spot on the list. Amount of students waitlisted will be higher this year - my guess anyway. But I don’t see why lists will be longer after students choose 1 of the 20 schools they applied to!!

My daughter got in 2025 via RD. I have to find out the financial aid package. She also got admitted by UCLA. The label price is $42k (UCLA) vs $54k. Not sure which one to go regarding the quality of the schools and the cost. She also got full ride for the two state public schools. Any advice?
