swarthmore transfer applicants

come out of the closet. is anyone else pulling strands of hair from their scalp in anticipation of The Letter from Swat?

well possibly i'm the only one here, but i saw on swarthmore's website that both may 1 and may 30 are listed as notification dates. confused, i emailed admissions.

i got this message:
"
Thank you for your message. We're very sorry to hear of the confusion
and do need to clarify that notification is not able to be done until
near the end of May (abiding by on or a little before May 30th). Our
apologies for the delay and we appreciate your understanding--please
take good care regardless and good luck to you in the considerations!

Kindly,

Swarthmore Admissions
"

gah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so i won't know until the end of freaking may???? that gives me two months to figure out where i'm living and where i'm going to school or even if i'm going to school. how ridiculous!
come on, swarthmore. every other school manages to get it together by at the LATEST mid-may.

frustrated

That's too bad. Hopefully, you'll get a letter from Swat on May 30th that makes you really happy and you'll know exactly where you will be living next fall.

thank you. i just needed to vent.

the plus side is this: i now might have some time to mail in a few supplementary materials. i emailed the transfer admissions director to see if it's a go. hopefully it'll enhance my chances of getting in.

Here's one. But I'm not pulling my hair just yet! 8-)

I got my acceptance letter yesterday!!

Wow. Congratulations.

There are some articles about transfers into Swarthmore. Apparently Jim Bock campaigned that Swarthmore should either commit to taking a reasonable number of transfers each year or just stop taking transfer applications entirely. There were years he was uncomfortable taking transfer apps only to turn around and accept few if any.

Now, I think they try to accept at least a handful every year and give transfers there own little orientation group and have them room together. From some transferrees posting here in the last couple of years, it sounds like a positive experience.

got my acceptance today!!!
SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i literally fell to the ground hyperventilating when i saw "this is the fat one!" written on the back of the big envelope. it was really awkward - several people drove by and saw me laying in a heap crying, sort of slowed down wondering, "should we help her?..."
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i feel like writing a thank you note to jim bock and the rest of the admissions team.
is that weird/inappropriate?

Wow. Double congratulations.

I'm sure Jim Bock and crew would appreciate a thank-you note. They probably get more hate mail this time of year!

LACtransferhopes and imswim91087-Congratulations! This thread is 2/2! :)

Congratulations! What are your reasons for transferring, and from what types of colleges, if you don't mind sharing.

i love jim bock
(completely down to earth and unpretentious)

see you on campus next year!

Thanks everyone!

I'm transferring from Penn State. I had countless reasons for transfer, but the basic gist of it is that practically no one takes academics seriously here and undergraduates don't really have that many personalized opportunities as a result of its sheer size and large quantities of graduate/Ph.D. students.

Later I'm going to type up a much longer thing about my application as I've had a few people who are intending to apply for transfer next year PM me and ask me about it. I know I wanted all the insight I could get as an applicant...

Congratulations!! I'm really happy everything worked out for you.

so who knows how the housing situation goes down for transfers?

big congrats to LACtransferhopes and imswim91087!
could u share ur backgrounds if u dont mind?
thanx and best luck!again,congratulations!

Here's the article with Bock talking about transfers. In 1996, Swarthmore didn't accept a single transfer and ended up sending all the transfer applicants their application fees back...

The Daily Gazette Admissions opens more doors to prospective transfer students

I can't find the article on housing, but I remember reading somewhere that the housing office tries to assign the transfer students rooms in the so-called "on campus" dorms (Willets, Worth, Lodges, Mertz, Alice Paul, Parrish, Wharton, Dana, Hollowell) which tend to be the larger, more social dorms -- easier to dive in and make new friends.

Transfers would go into rooms held back from the housing lottery and probably, on average, do better than Swarthmore sophmores picking in the housing lottery.

With the second of two new dorms coming on line this summer, Swarthmore should finally have a surplus of rooms and a little breathing room.

do you know if any singles are in those held back?...
it's just, i'm an only child and basically can't fathom living mere feet away from someone else at all times. what if they snore? or smell? or throw their stuff everywhere? or put manga all over the wall? or listen to linkin park at 1 am?

sophmores = doubles

what if they snore?

Earplugs are good. I recommend the soft disposable foam variety. Howard Leight MAX are the most comfortable for me and I've tried them all. If you have small ears, you might prefer the MAX-LITE.

or smell?

There are showers in the dorms!

or throw their stuff everywhere?

Most likely.

or listen to linkin park at 1 am?

Linkin Park at 1 am would probably be on an iPod.
