Anyone else apply to transfer to Swarthmore?

I am! I was surprised there wasn’t a transfer thread haha.

Hey! I just got my letter today! I was waitlisted! Super thrilled!

Rejected this morning via snail mail…

3.62 GPA, Emory.
3.75 HS GPA, Full IB + AP Calc. AB and a few language electives.
32 ACT: 34 E, 34 M, 35 R, 28 Sci, 10 Essay.

I took a medical withdrawal for alcoholism and drug addiction after 3 semesters at Emory.

Extracurriculars:
Writing- published writer; Atlanta lit-mag, Emory lit-mag, twice in the Emory Wheel, and I had a short play produced professionally.
Theater- lead/supporting actor in over 15 shows, tech/lighting/sound in over 7. Received credit for professional theater productions while at Emory.
Languages- autodidactic polyglot. Fluent in Spanish, proficient in Italian and French, proficient in German.
Trained healing minister.
Plus a few others…

I’m first generation and low-income.

Why was I rejected? I don’t know… maybe they viewed my past as a risk. Maybe I didn’t connect well-enough with the school because I never visited and, from what I’ve seen, most of the transfers have visited multiple times or lived close to the school.

Other decisions: Rejected at Rice, Amherst, and Yale. Accepted at Carleton.
I’ll be attending Carleton.

Honestly, my heart is a little broken. I did a great interview with Swat. back in October, I requested information multiple times, and I felt like I really had a shot there, especially after Carleton admitted me, along with 7 other students, from a pool of over 200 applicants.

But at least the decision is easier for me now. It’s clear that the universe wants me to go to Carleton, so there I’ll go.

Congratulations to those who were accepted.

Carleton is a great school. I hope you have a great experience there.

I wonder how long it would take for the decision letter to arrive abroad…

Hey, sorry about that. You never know
It’s Swarthmore…

My friend got rejected. FROM COLUMBIA
With like 3.8 GPA. And terrific stats

She just wanted a more quiet place
and when she received the mail she was like
Are you kidding me?

Anyone on CC accepted or waitlisted?

Bluecholeric: Transferring is not about stats, really. I think they’re just trying to fill a “hole” in the class. If they need an oboist and that’s your thing, you have a good shot. If not, doesn’t matter if you got into Columbia after HS. Also, maybe her entitled attitude came through, which doesn’t play well at Swat.

An acquaintance of mine was accepted as a transfer student from Oxy. He’s been a leader in the Occupy movement and has done some other really awesome things. No clue what his stats look like but I’m assuming they’re at least solid.

The last thread that included Swarthmore, Occidental and Columbia in the context of transfers involved one Barack Obama. (As many know, he was rejected by Swarthmore, matriculated at Occidental, and then transferred to Columbia.)

I agree with SwatGrad about stats. A transfer’s stats do not show up in the data sent to USNews or posted on the Common Data Set. If you accept a transfer with a 1950 instead of one with a 2300, that does not affect the reported average SAT for the first year class. The upshot is that there is less incentive to favor those with high SAT scores in transfer admissions.
