What is your intended major? Have you visited both schools? etc. etc. etc.

Currently my major is history. I have visited both and I like the area of both. Main question is, where would I have more opportunities at? UCLA or Swat. Also is UCLA a school where kids are just out to get jobs afterwards or are learning for the sake of learning.

if you're a history major, you generally aren't learning just to get a job after college. history majors are really into what they're learning! one of my friends who's a history major is going to become a high school history teacher, so she wants to spread her passion for history.

in more general terms, you really can't categorize such a huge school. sure, there are people who are in and out just to get a degree, but i'd say that's pretty rare. people here are proud of their school and really do get involved. after looking briefly on the swarthmore website, there seem to be a few fundamental differences: more emphasis on individual projects as part of each major (as opposed to only honors students doing that), smaller class offerings since it's a smaller school, and (to me) swarthmore seems a little more acadamia-oriented. we have much more surrounding ucla as far as sports and such.

each school will give you a solid education, so it depends on what you want. public or private, medium vs large, east vs west coast, semester vs quarter. i would focus more on THOSE differences rather than anything smaller- unless you know for sure that none of those make any difference to you at all.

Light vs. Dark, Good vs. Evil, White vs. Black, etc. ^^;

i spose you COULD look at it that way :rolleyes:

i'm just sayin' that the most obvious differences really would be the ones that mattered most, if i had to choose between the two.

More opportunities at UCLA since it's in Los Angeles, a well-known school, and it's very much pre-professional (but not as bad as Penn or Georgetown, for examples). As for Swat - it's more for the learning-for-learning's-sake, a strong, well-rounded liberal arts background, and non-pre-professionalism that manages to translate itself to strong graduates anyway.:rolleyes:
Why do you say it's rare? I doubt that. :rolleyes:

Go to Swarthmore for a stronger, integrated, and comprehensive education that focuses more on reading, writing, and analytical skills over the breadth of what you study. That and if you're considering professional or graduate studies - note that Swarthmore is known as a huge weeder, work-intensive school.

UCLA is its polar opposite.

i'd pick ucla anyday, for a million reasons. the only reason i'd say go to swarthmore is if you thrive or need a smaller more personal learning environment (hand holding and such) OR hate big cities

UCLA is a top 10 history department in the country and has more history faculty than any other university in the world. (NRC #6, US News #9) Some faculty are busy research institution types, but most are super cool and helpful.

^are you a history grad student/TA?
