Anyone get invited? I got a postcard saying "apply online."

Has anyone done this already? If so, can you tell me your experience, thanks.

hey beatfreaks,

I think you are referring to the ‘Discover Swarthmore!’ weekend program? Last year it was called ‘Swarthmore Discovery Weekend’ but I think they changed the name.

I went to Swarthmore’s Discovery Weekend last year and I highly encourage anyone who is interested in Swarthmore or interested in an liberal arts education to apply. Or even if you’re not sure, apply! I was already very interested in Swarthmore beforehand, but going to the program really allowed to me to get a feel for the school and made Swarthmore my #1 choice for college.

Last year, we lived on campus with a current student who was our host. We did typical visitor activities, such as take a tour, sit in on an information session, and hear about their financial aid program, but they also had many workshops held by various cultural organizations or campus departments that you can go to throughout the weekend. There was also a faculty panel, an alumni panel, and a student panel where we listened to what they have to say, and then asked questions. Every prospective student was also scheduled for an interview that went into our college admissions file, so that was a little nerve-wracking but all the interviewers were really nice from what I heard. On the last day we were able to sit in on classes of our choice. I had a lot of fun when I went and I made a lot of good friends who I still keep in touch with now, and that seemed to be the case with almost everyone who attended.

Statistics-wise,I think about 400 or more kids applied and only 165 or so made it into the program last year. There’s a statistic that something like 70% of the students accepted into the Discover Swarthmore program are accepted into the school when admissions decisions roll around.

I hope that helps! Feel free to ask any more questions that you might have.
