I'm considering using some profanity in my college essays, maybe even an essay based on the concept and use of swear words. It's risky, but I'm a risky writer, but would this be too controversial or would put off universities? Just to clarify, I don't mean swearing casually (I ******* LOVE HARVARD) or something like that, but as a start point to grab attention or as an essay topic. I don't know, I like to stand out :)

Anyway, any input would be appreciated!

It is risky and I’m not really seeing a good enough reward that could come out of it… I mean an example of the context would be help us understand what you are trying to achieve better.

I mean unless there’s a ridiculously good reason/theme that’s causing to you use it, I’d say that’s not really a great idea if you just want to grab attention.

I was considering writing one on something like this: http://justin.com.au/rudestuff/uses-of-the-word-f**k.html

The global use of the word is actually quite interesting if you actually consider it.

*you’re going to have to change the stars to a uc to see the link

I vote definitely no – i.e. No F** k ing Way!

I do mean it though… this is not a good idea at all. If you’re an edgy, risky writer that’s fine, but find something tasteful for your essay. You really don’t know who will be reading it. Save this experiment for your creative writing class AFTER you’re admitted to the school of your dreams.

I feel like it would impress the right reader that someone is risqu

Well, getting their attention is good… but remember the most important thing about the college essay is letting them learn something about you that the rest of your application doesn’t show. If you used just a touch of this it might work… but make the essay about you.

Okay fair enough. Its difficult enough to get yourself to stand out among the throngs of applicants who are also trying to stand out as well and there are only so many ways to get noticed in this process. But I do think this isn’t the way to do it. Back to the drawing board then!

Just FYI, the link I put out was a parody and very colloquial demonstration of “swearing” in an essay. Theres no way in hell I’d actually write it in that manner.
