My son’s friend is still waiting too. I can’t even believe it. UNH is a top choice school for him and I agree, the waiting is stressful @waitingkillsme - nice to have the support of other moms on here. They get it! I’m wishing well for all still waiting!! xo
My daughter was deferred as well. She applied to the Communication Science and Disorders major. The letter she received indicates that interest in her major has dramatically increased this year. They said they would admit her into a “non competitive” major now or she can wait for RD. She’s torn as to what she should do. Her weighted GPA is 3.9, SAT 1010, takes AP courses, volunteering, sports, etc.
@lucky978 sorry to hear about the deferral. Best of luck to your daughter in making her decision. It seems to be a little bit of a tough one! I feel like we go through all of this anxiety and let down and that in the very end it will all work out anyway. I’m sure she will get into the major of her choice eventually regardless of which route she chooses. Kids don’t attend or switch out of majors all the time. Hang in there!!!
I am shocked UNH is deferring kids with a 3.9 gpa when I know they have accepted kids with much lower GPAs. But, I guess in this its not because of her stats its because she chose a very competitive major - correct? My daughter is interested in Exercise Science which now looking at their website I see that it says “There are more applicants a year to the Kinesiology:Exercise Science major than the University of New Hampshire can accommodate. The size of the major is kept small so that it can meet accreditation requirements for student: faculty ratios in the classroom, labs and clinical placements.” But it also says “Students begin the Exercise Science major the semester following acceptance to the program–Generally Spring of the Sophomore year.” So why would they defer admission for the reason of selecting a competitive major if kids don’t begin course work in the major until after completing their freshman year???
Follow-up on my question how do we find out what majors are “non-competive”?
^^curious about this too. My son’s letter said nothing about high interest in his major (wildlife and conservation biology). Reading some of these other students stats, I should be thankful he’s still being considered and not given a flat out denial. We just submitted to URI as well, I’m hoping he’ll have a shot for their wildlife program, we’ll see but he really needs to decide his major! We have schools for criminal justice and wildlife/conservation.
@waitingkillsme I’m not sure about this but I think the inquiry as to what major is “non-competitive” is a question for admissions. They should be able to tell you which majors get the most applications vs. spots available and vice versa. This “major” restriction creates an interesting dilemma for my S too. He applied as undeclared because he was going back and forth between biological sciences, communications and computer science career paths. So, he still has to “declare” a major and so, I’m wondering if there will be any walls in place when he goes to do that or if he will be able to move into the major of his choice. It will definitely be a question for admitted students day visit!!
@waitingkillsme here is what I found on UNH website for admitted students:
Competitive Majors
DON’T PANIC if you aren’t initially admitted to a competitive major.
Unfortunately, we can’t offer every admitted student direct admission into our restricted majors. Some have space limitations; others require the completion of specific coursework. However, many UNH students eventually apply to these restricted majors as an “internal transfer” after fulfilling the necessary coursework. Here’s a list of our restricted majors, with information about prerequisites and the previous year’s internal transfer criteria—a good predictor, although not a guarantee, of what you’ll need to do to gain admission.
Athletic Training
Communication Sciences and Disorders
Kinesiology: Exercise Science
Nursing
Nutrition
Occupational Therapy
Paul College of Business and Economics
Undeclared: Health and Human Services
@EAB426 I’m hoping we won’t be in the same situation at URI as both of my daughters applied there as well. Ihunted around their website and found their list of competitive majors and Communication Science and Disorders was not listed.
@lucky978 keeping my fingers crossed! We just submitted to URI and I’m hoping his midterm grades will help as that’s what UNH deferred him for. I was hoping my son would be able to make a decision early April, but looks like we may have to push back until the end of the month until those decisions come from UNH and URI. Keep me posted when you hear!
Another follow-up question would be isn’t it likely that lots of space will free up for Regular decision and for majors since only about 20% of all admitted students will actually attend? Or maybe not since UNH requires kid to apply for early acceptance for their restricted majors…confused…
@NorthofBoston26 sorry to hear about the deferral at USC. I didn’t see that before. My S is still waiting to hear from USC. He applied regular decision after he was denied admission to Ohio State. Maryland is his top of the pyramid reach school. Having been denied at Ohio we are not that optimistic but miracles do happen UNH was his first choice public after Maryland, even over Ohio. He just fell in love with UNH when he visited. The campus and kids were very welcoming. He is going to visit UVM though as everyone keeps telling him not to decide until he has visited all campuses and he was accepted EA to Providence and Loyola which he applied to because he has always been in smaller, private schools. We weren’t sure of his chances at all there and quite honestly, didn’t expect admission - especially EA so now we are visiting those too. Weighing all options. Roger Williams and Marist were his target schools and he got money at RW but since he got into UNH, UVM and Loyola and Providence he took those off the table. We too, are grateful to have other choices but still holding out for the reach decision which is due by Jan 30th. Biting nails here!!! Will your daughter hold out for the reg. decisions at USC and UNH or does she have another school which is taking the lead? I’m curious because a lot of kids seem to be jumping around on first choice schools and I’m hesitant to commit my S too soon, regardless of what he says now. I feel a lot can happen between now and May 1st.
If she should be admitted RD at USC, she will jump. She has lost the burn for UNH…we truly considered a safe target…if that makes sense?
@NorthofBoston26 it totally does. These kids take these decisions personally (and they should by right) as they are good students with goals and first choices! It really is a blow to their ego when the first choice (especially if it is a target for the most part) defers/rejects them. By this, I don’t mean to say that kids are “entitled” to their first choice school, but rather that to them, it is a huge deal and I get the whole desire to move on. Schools that really want them become much more attractive! It makes them feel better about themselves and also their capabilities. It is probably a much better way to start college life - more confidence!!! Best of luck and fingers crossed for your D on RD at USC!!!
@EAB426 we just heard from URI today - both of my daughters were accepted! Did your son just apply to URI? Hopefully he will hear soon. I don’t think my daughter (the one that was deferred from UNH) will end up going to UNH. URI was higher on her list!
@waitingkillsme I don’t think that is the case unfortunately since they will get more applicants for regular admission. I think they probably took the top kids for the major - then want to compare the rest to the regular applicant pool then make their decision. they don’t want to fill up then have some top applicants have to be denied later due to space limitations. at least that’s my understanding.
@lucky978 CONGRATULATIONS to your girls! No, we haven’t heard back from URI as we just applied, so I don’t expect a decision until March. He just got his ecampus sign in today and they haven’t received his SAT scores yet from college board. Right now we’ve scheduled accepted students days at Roger Williams and University of New Haven. We’ve already visited New Haven and he really liked the campus and said he would be happy there. Me, not so much. I worry about the area. We haven’t seen RWU yet, we will visit in February. He was also accepted to Unity College in Maine, but that’s out. Very small college in the middle of nowhere. We’re still holding out hopes for UNH and review of his mid term grades. 1st quarter he wound up at 3.5, this quarter 3.7. He’s taking mid terms this week so we’ll see what happens. URI is looking more attractive to me because of the New England Regional tuition break he’ll get taking Wildlife Biology because we are MA residents. I’ll be so glad when this is done! This is more stressful on me than him! He literally could care less where he winds up! : )
@EAB426 I am very familiar with UNewHaven if you have any questions. RWU campus is pretty - on the water and very close to Newport. URI is one we didn’t look at although I have to say that NERegional Tuition break is a nice deal! My S is thinking about a genetics major at UNH - also a tuition break for us since we are in CT. I also agree that this is stressful on the parents and to some extent maybe more so than on the kids! I am a prof and advisor and thought the process would be much easier for me but it really isn’t. I think it is somewhat stressful waiting for these decisions! Best of luck!!
@xaviermom2017, thank you! At this point we are in a holding pattern on a decision until URI and UNH come in. I don’t expect to hear until the end of March. UNH extended their RD application deadline until March 1. I’m expecting the deferred kids will not hear from them until the end of the month for sure. Does anyone know why they would change their application deadline from Feb 1 until March 1? We have accepted students visit scheduled for RWU on Sunday, but now a storm is coming so who knows if we’ll even get there. New Haven is in March. I’ve been very impressed with their follow up and answering all our questions, they’ve been wonderful. The area is still my biggest concern, but there are a lot of colleges in not great areas. Those are the two schools on his radar right now, but he’d really like to be at a larger University. Soooooo we wait!
@EAB426 I don’t know why UNH would’ve extended the deadline for apps. That’s crazy! Especially when they have kids who really want to attend. We are planning to visit UNH again on the 21st to get more information on the computer IT program. UMaryland was his first choice but he didn’t get in. He loved UNH just as much when we visited the first time though so I’m excited to go back and learn more about what they have to offer. I have been following a lot of threads on here and if UNH is really a top choice for your son I would definitely try to get in touch with the admissions officer and make sure they know how interested he is in attending. Keep me posted! Best of luck!!!
@xaviermom2017 we haven’t done anything since the deferral was received. The letter specifically said not to send any additional test scores, letters of recommendations or call for an interview. Do you think sending a email letting them know that his high school recently sent his mid term grades and that he’s still very much interested in attending UNH and looks forward to their decision would be ok?
