Swim Class issues

I’m just going to start off by stating I’m annoyed. I figured, I’m in college, I don’t need to worry about dress code ever, and this includes the swim class I signed up for (HPE class was required for degree). But the first day of swim class was today and the class was informed that bikinis are not allowed. Because they’re “too revealing” this annoys the crap out of me on multiple levels.

Now I understand, we’re there to learn different swim strokes and actually swim. So I thought, practical swim suits would be required, so no string bikinis, or the ones where your butt is hanging out, etc. But this class is just no bikinis in general.

All I own is bikinis, and lemme tell you right now they’re all practical. I can actually swim and move around in them without an issue, I’m not falling out of them, they’re all simple bikinis. I don’t like one pieces. All these surprise purchases were just thrown at me today which I had no clue about. Gotta buy goggles, gotta buy flippers, and now a whole new swim suit.

I didn’t think there’d be additional purchases, if I had known this beforehand I would’ve picked volleyball instead. But swimming is a great exercise and I thought it’d be a perfect way to get in shape, plus I love swimming.

I’m so annoyed that I have to buy a swim suit that I KNOW I won’t wear outside of this class. I’m already annoyed that I have to take a stupid HPE class to begin with, which has nothing to do with my major. I asked if we could wear athletic bikinis (cause I could actually get some use out of that) or even one of those surfer girl tops but noooooo. Apparently stomachs are too sexualized now.

So now I’m tempted to buy the most revealing or most ridiculous one piece swim suit I could find.

Have you considered asking your teacher if you can wear a t-shirt or tank top over your bikini? The resistance will make swimming a little bit more challenging, but it might be a viable option if spending extra money on a swim suit is a hindrance. If you present it to your teacher as a financial hardship and ask maturely, it might work.

(Not inappropriate, just so strappy that it’s basically a bikini.)

Well… it’s a class, and like any class you should go in knowing you’ll probably have to buy course materials, in this case, goggles, flippers and apparently, yes, a swim suit. The fact that you may not use it outside of class, well, just doesn’t hold water. I won’t use my chemistry textbook outside of class but I still have to buy it for the course, right?

And just because you’re in college doesn’t mean you won’t ever face dress code. Take a lab class, and they might stipulate closed-toed shoes and long-sleeves. Take a business class, and maybe you’ll have to dress business formal for a presentation. I really don’t get the outrage.

Have you looked into whether it is too late to drop it and switch into volleyball?

I would think that bikinis are not allowed not because they are sexualized, but because they are not practical for swimming…e.g., they are likely to fall off if you are diving in/turning, etc., create too much drag,
