How involved is the swim test for PE? Is the test the first day of class? If you pass, do you then choose another class to fulfill PE requirements? Info please??

You have to swim 500 yards (that's 20 laps) and then dive into the middle of the pool and retrieve a 15 lb weight and then swim it to the edge of the pool.

JK.. that's the lifeguard test that you have to take if you want to take the lifeguard certification test.

Don't worry about it. I think you only have to swim 4 across the pool using something that resembles a stroke (it might be 2 on your front, 2 on your back). If you pass, you can choose classes for all 6 of your PE rotations. If you fail, you have to take swim lessons that count as 2 of your PE rotations. Regardless, 2 of the other rotations are a health class called Contemporary Topics and then the other two are elective.

Lol, I thought that seemed a bit harsh...I remember doing that for lifeguard training. The Notre Dame swim test should be a piece of cake. :)

lol, I was a high school swimmer so I thought that the lifeguard training was a piece of cake (I actually enjoyed it a lot and sprinted the 500). I am a sick, sick man!

Lol, Irish, I did the same thing! Though I doubt I could swim it as fast now, since I haven't swam competitively for a couple years and my only lap swimming now is in my family's backyard swimming pool, which is considerably less than 25 yards...

At least you have a backyard pool! I haven't swam competitively now in four years and haven't swam laps in over a year...sad really. I know I still could do a 500, but it would look pathetic and hurt like heck. Dang, and I used to make my kids swim it when I was a swim coach. I really need to get back in shape now that I think about it!

Lol, me too. How easy is it to use Notre Dame swim facilities?

it isn't bad, the only thing I have struggled with a bit are the hours and sometimes it is a bit crowded, but if you go right when open swim starts it isn't a problem. Motivation is more of a problem for me :)

As another swimmer (my last USS practice after 7 years was this morning), I was wondering if ND has any kind of intramural swim program. If not, we should start one.

Yes, and they are pretty hardcore! They swim every night and they have USS-like practices! If you want to keep swimming, that is definitely a good option. After years of year-round swimming, I just couldn't do it though :(. I needed a break!

Hmm...I think that's probably be a bit too hardcore for me (I'm sooo slow now, lol). What time does open swim start, Irish?

I think during the week it was either in the morning or they had another session (which I did) that started at about 1 in the afternoon and went until 5-6, which isn't bad. Not sure what it will be this year though

Awesome. I don't do well with mornings~ I might drown, lol. :) But hopefully I'll be able to spend some time at the pool this coming year.

Oh my goodness. I had no idea I would have to know how to swim!!! I'm not accepted, but Im sure scared. I think I could probably swim to save my life, but thats about it.

Well, worst come to worst you will learn how to swim! Don't stress it too much, really!
