Swim test to Graduate?

So I found out recently that Cornell requires students to pass their swim test to graduate..is this true? I mean I personally don't have anything against it, but I haven't heard of anything like that either.

yes its true. if you really cannot swim, you can take beginning swim PE class

[Freshman Swim Test Made Coed After 92 Years | The Cornell Daily Sun](Freshman Swim Test Made Coed After 92 Years - The Cornell Daily Sun)

This article explains the entire process well.

there are quite a few universities that require swim tests, and cornell is one of them. to just name a couple of others, i know columbia has one (unless you’re an engineer - they joke that it’s bc they can just build a bridge over any body of water) and so does dartmouth.

Does phys ed count on your transcript? Does it count as one of the 4-5 classes you take a semester?

physical education courses are 1 credit non-graded…

they do count for federal standards of “full time” enrollment…meaning you can take 11 academic classes and 1 PE to make it a total of 12 credits…

i once did:

2 - 4 credits
1 - 3 credit
1 - PE

^this doesn’t appear to apply to every school/college at Cornell. from the Hotel School website:

http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/students/ugrad/handbook/physed-requirement.html

same for CAS:

http://courses.cuinfo.cornell.edu/AS.php

I’m not going to go through every college but you get the idea, and anyone wanting to know about their own school should head to google.

good catch faustarp…
