Who cares? who the heck can't swim? I read this post laughing.

Hah...I actually thought the swim test was kind of a favor to the students, so you can get an opportunity to check out everyone's bodies right away!! :) Sounds like fun to me!

me too. You don't even have to "swim" the swim test. Hell, you can even float on your back and let everybody else's waves carry you from one end to the other.

Is it done indoors or outdoors? Even in August, I don't think I could stand water in 60-70 degree weather (I'm from Florida hehe)...

FROM THE 2008 CORNELL PAGE:

Who takes the test?

All freshman arriving at Cornell are required to take the swim test. There are almost never any exemptions. Transfers may or may not have to take the swim test depending on how many semesters they have been granted academic credit for. For more information about the swim test if you are a transfer, see this page. Generally, incoming transfers who are given sophomore or higher standing do not have to take the swim test.

What does the swim test entail?

The test consists of a continuous 75 yard swim which is 3 lengths of the pool. The first length is swum on your front, the second on your back, and the last is left to your choosing. You can take as long as you want, there is no time limit.

But ... I know I can't swim. Do I need to sign up?

No, but you will need to sign up for Beginning Swim at PE registration during Orientation.

What if I can't/don't/fail the test?

If you fail to complete the swim test, you will need to take Beginning Swim as a PE course to bring your skills up to the level of proficiency. If you just miss the test, you will be penalized and forced to pay a charge when you take make up. (This charge does not apply to students taking Beginning Swim)

Where will the test be?

Men and women will take the test in separate pools in separate buildings. Men generally take the test in Teagle and women in Helen Newman Hall.

Anything special I need to do?

You are required to shower first and come prepared with ID at your chosen time slot. Women may chose either one piece or two piece, there is no requirement. You cannot wear a tshirt in the pool and you should remove (and not even bring with you) any jewelry. Men should also be appropriately prepared.

I didn't post this thread because Im worried or anxious about it. I just thought it was strange and it made me laugh and i was curious where it's origins come from because i've never heard of something like this before, although apparently a good amount of schools have it.

do u think some of the exemptions include- not being able to get your hair wet....
