Swim Test

So I haven't swam in past 2 years or so (haha, I live in San Diego too...). I'm not exactly sure if I have the endurance to go the 100 yards; I'm positive I can do 50, but 100 is very iffy. My question is:
(1) Does a swim class count towards any of the 8 PE credits you have to fulfill?

yep.

.

Stupid question, but is 100 yards around 100m?

About 10 meters difference.

If you google "100 yards to meters", Google will tell you. True story.

It's also .45454545... furlongs in the F3 (Furlong/Firkin/Fortnight) system of measurement.

Google will also convert to smoots. 100 yards is 53.73 smoots.. for the record. :p

so at MIT it is 'sink or swim',..

Umm..anyone out there like me who can't swim at all. I am so gonna fail the swim test.

It's all cool tropicalisland. If you can't swim, don't take the swim test, and just take the beginner swim class to get exempt from the swim test.

sort of ironic to name yourself tropicalisland if you can't swim. guess you're stuck there,..

Well land is the opposite of water, remember? ;)

I guess it is. Anyway, everyone can learn to swim. Instructors will help overcome your doubts and fears. You will be quite proud of yourself. And soon you will be diving!!

hopefully.. that would be cool. I would love to dive near a tropical island.

of course, skillful swimmer though you might then be, there is still lurking in those tropical waters the disquieting menace of sharks,..so stick to the MIT pool.

sharks are cool..

tropicalisland, you dive?

no way... lol. i can't swim.. look above at my previous post^

you don't have to be able to swim to dive; in fact, sinking is a more useful property. ;)

I am fairly confident I will be able to traverse (careful choice of language there) 100 yards in a pool without drowning. I assume that by drowning, you automatically fail the test? :P

Anyways, I took swim lessons as a kid, and was a pool nut until my parents bought a computer. Fast forward 10 years, and I'm a tennis player looking at Course 6 at MIT. ;)

-Jared

"I assume that by drowning, you automatically fail the test"

yes but the curve might resuscitate you,..
