Swimming and applying to colleges

Let me start off saying that I am sorry if this sounds dumb, this is just a topic that I have been thinking about and I desperately want to avoid making mistakes. I would love any input/advice/clarification on the subject that you can give.

I have been recruited (swimming) by several schools, and I narrowed it down to the schools I am interested in. I have scheduled a few official visits and I want to start applying now, though I have yet to settle on a school. I just need a little reassurance - applying to a school does not signify that you will commit and sign with them, correct? I am fearful that if I apply now (early decision non binding and rolling admissions) I have given the coach this idea that by sending in an application, it will mean that I am set on attending there. My plan was to apply to the schools that I am interested in and choose based off of my experience with the team, what the program has to offer and merit based aid (there is more going into the decision, listing everything seems like overkill). Should I wait until I know for sure where I want to swim and attend, or apply and then choose?

If you can’t tell, I’m obviously new at this and want to avoid getting myself into any messes. Thanks a lot in advance if you can help out a confused senior like me!

Early Decision (ED) would be a binding commitment to attend if admitted. Early Action (EA), rolling admission or regular decision (RD) would not bind you to attend. It is OK to apply and decide later. It is also OK to apply to a school that offer ED but just make sure you check the RD box.

First, congrats for working hard and being a recruited athlete. The schools that you are looking at are they D1 or D3?
Did the coaches have your transcripts sent to admissions for a preread? Did you do the financial aid calculator on the schools websites?
Lastly, are any of the schools academic reach schools for you? If so, and if you will need coaches help to get in, that is when you in exchange need to apply ED.
Best to ask your questions to each coach via email. Better to ask and get all your info.
Good Luck
