swimming is a must

lol - i was looking at the wikipedia entry for UNC and i found this little bit...

"All students must complete a swim test and two physical education courses if not in a varsity sport in order to graduate."

anyone know why?

are u serious?

I believe that the class that entered in 2005 is the last one that will be required to pass the swim test.

My daughter in law graduated from UNC and what she told me was: a man's son died by drowning several years ago. He made some kind of donation to the school and stipulated that every student who graduated from UNC must know how to swim.

mkm, from what i have gathered, i believe that is a bit of an urban legend. I have heard several versions of that story, including one in which the donor was a member of the Navy and thought all students should know how to swim.

UNC is not the only school that requires it. I have friends at Colgate University that also must pass the test.

But yes, indeed, the class of 2009 is the last one that requires a swim test. They are doing a whole revamp of the curriculum for incoming students, so you rising freshmen get off easy. (lucky!)
