I was browsing online and just saw that Cornell freshmen or rather or the ivy freshmen need to take the swimming tesst in the beginning of the year. I know the question sounds kinda silly?
but does anyone know the specific length(50m 200m?)and style (say you can only front-crawl instead of breast-stroking)required in order to pass? thanks.

its been discussed.
if i remember correctly, you have to do 3 lengths.
1 on your chest
2 on your back
3 of your own choice

does how well one swims get judged or as long as you just swim 3 laps?

yes, those who don't have good form have to take a remedial swim class and get a 0.5 grade point penalty from their first semester.

it's an Olympic-size pool, 50m length

do we have to do front-crawl?

I think they don't want people drowning in the lake or the gorges. Hmm... interesting.

i hope ameechee is joking lmao

The .5 grade point penalty doesn’t sound quite right lol it seems kind of illogical to penalize someone for their lack of expertise in something like swimming, that’s why they make you take the class…but then again it could be true…lol

Swimming is a skill that Cornell regards highly. If you fail the swim test but pass the beginners swimming class at Cornell you will get 0.4 of that 0.5 GPA deduction right back. You still have a chance to get a 3.9 which isn't too bad.

Since they offer the swim test during orientation and that's August and it's hot ... don't worry about it! Go for a little swim, get your first ticket punched towards graduation, and get cooled off!

My son said it was fun ... wanted to do it again. He went with a bunch of friends/athletes. He knows how to swim (obviously, since he passed) but I wouldn't call him a strong swimmer.

Serious question about the swim test:

My daughter will be going to Cornell next fall and will have to take the swim test. She can swim, but when she takes out her contact lenses to get into the water, she is practically blind. I'm not sure that she will even be able to determine where the edge of the pool is.

Do you know anybody with bad eyesight who has had to take the swim test? How did they manage?

My d is blind and she swims just fine - she doesn't dive in (duh- wouldn't that be a leap of faith), the ropes help her stay in her lane and she counts her strokes to know when she is near the end of a lap.

Is this a timed swim test, or just a simple back and forth, push off from the wall, no touching bottom kind of thing?

i usually drown when i swim .... will there be any lifeguards around

lol...this sounds really silly....

Is this for all students required? or what??
and what if you drown? I can't swim in deep pools (pools deeper than 5 ft --I know its not deep for a lot of people but I'm short...)

if you're scared that youll drown, just dont sign up for it and take the swimming class instead

from the looks of it, a lot of people will be taking the beginning class

and...is this only at Cornell?? how is it performed? is it one person at a time, or bunch of ppl at a time? how is it judged?

haha!! actually, i have HORRIBLE eyesight and was on my high school swim team and of course, passed the swim test! your daughter will be fine....I, of course, cannot clearly see where I'm going or the other people around me but with the lane lines and everything, she'll be able to see....she'll definitely see the wall at the end of the pool because she'll be pretty close to it to touch it :)

i heard that they seperate the girls from the guys. so no big deal. im 5'10 at 205lbs. and i have pretty big belly however im pretty strong. no big deal if i show myself to the public. blah.

jimgotkp, just be grateful that you didn't go to Cornell 30 years ago.

In those days, the men did their swim test in the nude.

The women wore bathing suits because their swim test was held at Helen Newman, which has a glassed-in observation deck over the pool. But at Teagle, where the men's test was held, there is no observation deck. Therefore, no suits.
