How much time do they spend teaching you to swim before they expect you to be fast? I can swim, but I'm no squid. I heard they don't expect you to go in swimming, but you definitely come out a swimmer. Any input would be appreciated.

All the requirements are listed here:

...and some recommended training programs here:

Think about it: if you don't learn, you'll drown.

They'll teach you enough to pass. To do really well is up to you.

That said, I'd recommend you learn beforehand. A lot less stress that way.

Now, is all of that in full gear?

Speaking of swimming, does anyone at the Academy know someone on the swim team at the Academy that I can talk to about it.

yeah, i was about to ask that same question (about the swim team thing)

also, does anyone know another on the soccer team?

i'm on the swim team at the academy. my sn is bebedavril, im me if you have a question.

I am going to NAPS and I definately cannot swim. I lived next to the ocean most of my life and my mom has never allowed us near water. Now she regrets it. I've been trying to learn how to swim for a while now.

I started swimming at like age 3 and took professional lessons until I was like 11 years old. I haven't even gone to a pool since then. I think I'm heading to Australia this summer to take on swimming if I get accepted to USNA. =)

I can't swim at all.

You might want to learn.

Yeah, I know ...

Ugh, i have the same concern....swimming is not my forte quite yet. although i can do a mad good doggy-paddle.

The secret is to try to do it gracefully. If you try it will happen and not take as much energy. Don't force it.

wheeleh44,
instead of watching scary movies, let's talk about the 10 meter platform jump requirement. Can you explain when one has to start jumping and from which platform. What is the graduation requirement?

Swimming is a skill and all you need to do to develop the skill is practice with the proper technique. If you cannot swim, take lessons now. I think it will be very difficult to do this during plebe year. If you can swim a little bit, you may want to consider joining a local swim club so that you can practice lap swimming and build some endurance.

another resource to tap into is your local YMCA/YWCA- most have pools that you can join at a nominal fee and they offer adult swimming lessions for all levels of swimmers, especially beginners. Some even allow you access to gyms- the one in our town, while it might not be the "best" around, has a decent one. I would agree that learning to swim before you get to Annapolis would be one less stress to deal with over Plebe Summer.

The 10 meter..that is so much fun!!! I did it over the summer at camp!!!

Have to laugh thinking about the ten meter tower jump. In OCS, they had us all lined up single file at the top. The instructor barked out, "one pace forward...march!" You were so conditioned, you just did it in rythm with everybody else. I guarantee gravity will take over. The hard part for me was staying under water long enough to complete the "burning oil" maneuver. You had to stay underwater and swim away from the tower for x number of yards. I was too buoyant and had a tendance to come right up! I hated every minute of swimming but it wasn't that hard, even for a chicken like me.

Do they blindfold you for this jump? They did that to my ds at cga.
