I’m at an academic crossroads. I’m nearly finished with an associate’s degree in political science but pondering a change in direction to a more practical degree. I have been involved in politics, working as a paid field operative (and legislative staff), despite not holding a degree. I’m considering transitioning into an IT degree that my local college offers. The idea would be to complete a 2-year applied associate’s degree in an IT program, followed by getting my foot in the door with that degree, while continuing my education to an eventual 4-year degree. Since I’ve been able to land political gigs without holding a degree, I question the notion of continuing a path to bachelor’s in political science. There hasn’t been a shortage of job offers to me from political organizations and elected officials looking for official legislative staff. Thoughts? What would you do?
If you already have an associate’s degree in political science (or will very soon), I don’t see the point of getting another associate’s degree in IT - you should just transfer to a four-year college and declare IT as your major. It may take you a little longer than 2 years, but getting another associate’s and then transferring to a four-year will take you closer to 4.
I think the answer really depends on what you want to do. Do you want to work in IT? Of course you don’t need a BA in political science to work in politics and government; people do that with all kinds of majors and academic backgrounds. The question is - what do you want to study for the next 2-3 years, and where do you want to start your career?
Yeah, see if you can transfer to a four year school and declare IT as your major.
