Switch out of AP chem before the school year starts ?

I'm considering switching out of AP Chemistry...but I'm not sure if I should. I want a good transcript when I graduate and I also want to stand out when it comes to my application. I was thinking about switching out of AP chem and taking the honors course instead. Should I? My friends have told me to switch out while I can but I'm not sure. Any tips ? Advice? I'm going to be a junior btw.

Have you taken chemistry before?

Don’t let fear keep you from challenging yourself. If you’ve met the prerequisite you should be fine. (Also, if you’re switching out because you think the math will be hard…it’s not the math that makes it hard.)

No I’ve never taken chemistry before. And lol yeah it’s the math that worries me.

Switch out!!! You can’t take AP Chem without honors chem! Save yourself before it’s too late!!!

Ahem. That is my personal opinion. I hated AP Chemistry. My teacher taught us nothing and sat at her computer all class period. I learned nothing.

You however, may very well be in a different situation. What are your particular concerns?

AP Chem isn’t really that bad, and honors chem will only prepare you for like the first two weeks of AP. Just teach yourself the basics of stoichiometry before school starts and you won’t be behind at all.

I took ap chemistry without honors or regular chemistry. I only got a 3 though. It’s doable. Two of my friends got 4s at my school without any chemistry experience.

I switched out. I was recommended to be a sophomore taking AP Chem when I had a B average in Geometry (so I only had algebra 1 experience!) I am taking honors chemistry this following year. If you are worried about the math, by all means, switch out (my reasoning). Time management is also an issue for a lot of people. The homework and studying takes HOURS every night. If chemistry is a field you want to go in, I recommend taking the honors chemistry course first and then AP. A lot of my peers are rushing into taking AP Chem when they don’t have the love for it, just the love of being #1. So basically, honors chemistry would be your best bet, and if you love the subject, take AP the next year.

I’m just worried about not passing the class. I really want to get into USC or NYU which is why I’m talking AP chem. I want to be a screen writer so taking the class is very useless on regards of my college major.

I wish people wouldn’t think that way, especially in high school. Your college will most likely make you take courses outside your major.
But I don’t think not taking AP Chem will be a dealbreaker at any school. And you could take it next year…colleges will see your senior-year schedule.

Take Honors Chem. If you’re not STEM oriented, you might be biting off more than you can chew.

DONT SWITCH OUT GO FOR THE GOLD!

unless u wanna pass.

Junior year is the most important. AP Chem is a rigorous course and may hinder your likeliness to succeed in other APs. Especially because you don’t want to major in a scientific field, taking AP Chem will not be significant while applying to colleges. Instead, taking classes that you will excel in without being overloaded is a better route, in my opinion. Plus you can still boost your GPA with Honors. If you’re second guessing yourself, I’d definitely suggest Honors!
