Switching after accepting admission

What do I do if I already accepted a non-binding admission and want to switch to another college?

Do I cancel with the first college before sending my acceptance to the second one?

Here's the real question: why did you accept the offer of the first school or apply ED if you weren't 100% that this was the school for you?

it was probably EA which is non binding

It was non-binding EA, it also got this well before I got in elsewhere.

Should I just call the school and say "my plans have changed"?

I guess that's best. If you haven't sent them money then it's not official. That's the difference between ED and EA. That's why I assumed it was ED, because with EA you aren't automatically commited with acceptance to that school, so with EA you shouldn't be in this situation unless there has been a drastic change with your family or finances that makes it difficult or impossible for you to go now. If that's the case, the school will understand. If it's just "I changed my mind", then that won't be taken so well. Don't tell me you didn't know that it's a big college application process "no-no" to accept a school's offfer of admission if you aren't sure. Not having all your acceptances/waitlists/rejections before making a choice would make you unsure. I learned this last year when I applied to my school ED, got unexpected money from a different school but couldn't go because I was commited ED to my current school. The other school wouldn't have been a good fit anyway, but that's beside the point. My point was that you shouldn't have accepted the EA spot if you weren't sure, unless you've had a big change since you've accepted the spot. Why is it that you have changed your mind?

I found the courses more interesting and the program for my field to be better.

Don't feel fazed. It's not like your some 5 star recruited athlete who verbally committed for 2 years then signed a letter of intent with a different school.

You got an EA school. You paid your deposit because you were psyched and felt good. You got into another school you felt better about and want to change your mind. All that's left is resigning yourself to the lost $250 or so deposit.

No biggie.

yeah, you can still withdraw, but you will definitely lose any money you have given to the first school. Make sure you withdraw from the first school first to avoid getting caught in a double enrollment situation. This happens all the time with waitlists, trust me, the school would rather you back out now than in mid-may.
