Switching Between Impacted Majors

In the engineering school, is it difficult to change majors if you desire to switch to an impacted major at Cal Poly Pomona?

If you’re thinking of applying to an easy major and then switch to an impacted major, you might as well forget about it. They will put change-of-majors on the same pile as new applicants. It’s best that you get into the major that you want in the first place. Even if it means a lower chance of getting into Cal Poly Pomona for an impacted major.

I’ll presume that your advice was meant to be constructive. I said “the engineering school.”

My impression is that there are not any “easy” majors in the engineering school at Cal Poly Pomona. If I remember correctly, there are a handful of impacted majors in the engineering school, Mechanical Engineering for example. I want to know if one begins his engineering studies at CPP as an Aerospace major, how easy would it be to switch to Mechanical if the student discovered that he didn’t really care for Aerospace studies after all.

sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude. The only impacted engineering majors last year were Civil and mechanical, but I am sure that the other ones are in more demand than, let’s say, psychology, at CPP. I would suggest looking at the class flow charts to see if your two majors have any classes in common and take those first. I know the GEs will be mostly the same, but look for engineering or related classes. Though they will treat change of majors the same as new applicants, having a similar background will help.

I’m certain petrarch’s advise was well intended. Indeed, the College of Engineering has two impacted major at this time (Mechanical and Civil) and switching to those impacted majors (even if you were admitted to an impacted program yourself) could be troublesome -albeit not impossible. According to the Registar’s Office regarding impacted majors:

"Both lower-division and upper-division students requesting a change of major to an impacted program must meet the supplemental requirements required for that major.

Requests for changes to impacted majors must be received by the end of the initial filing period for the term for which new majors are being accepted (i.e., February 28 for summer; November 30 for fall; June 30 for winter; August 31 for spring)."

Next’s year impaction list gets published in late November or early December. For what I have been able to gather, Electrical and Industrial may become impacted for 2011/2012.

I guess I meant, there’s probably no hidden back door into impacted majors at CPP or other CSUs. In my major of Architecture, most students passed up offers from UCLA and UCSB, so the admit requirements for that department are about as tough as those Universities. There’s no easier way into it but If you maintain a high GPA in another major at CPP, and show interest in the field, you may have a chance at a successful change of major.

Thank you Petrarch and Cal Poly Engineer.
