I know there has been a shortage of chemistry sections.
I'm currently in section 22, but it clashes with ALL of the other classes I want to add during add/drop period.

Would it be nearly impossible to switch sections? I don't want to drop it and then not be able to take Chemistry this semester.

If you really want chemistry, I would keep it. Other sections should open up but you have to be ready to grab them so know your schedule and what fits.

Have alternative classes ready in case you don’t get your first choices. As a freshman, there are probably several elective courses that you will eventually have to take so look at all of your options. You may have to compromise on some classes in order to get your most important classes.

You may never get some of the classes that you want to take because they just won’t fit into your schedule. My son didn’t get his first choice of electives 1st or second semester so he just took his other options.

try to find someone in your hall willing to trade sections. Like make sure you guys drop at the same time and instantly add the course. For example, once you get to webreg familirize yourself with the system. Each section of a course has a 5 digit index course which you can use to register so you can just enter it and hit register instead of going through the list of classes to find the section and register it. and You should do it early in the morning around 8 or when it opens up since there will be less people on it and less chance someone else takes it.

Don’t drop it without making sure it doesn’t go away. If you see a section open i would wait 1-2 mins to see if its still open and then try to register for it.

When you are trying to switch sections of the same course, you do not need to drop before you add. You can just put in the course index for the section you want (has to be an open section), and WebReg will drop you from your current section and add your new section. I once made the mistake of dropping a section before trying to add, and I got sniped by someone else.

What shipponz said is also a legitimate option, but be very, very careful if you choose to do that. You should literally sit down right next to the person you are switching with and have your laptops ready. Drop at the same time and then quickly put in the new course index. NEVER attempt to do this during times of high traffic on WebReg (like when registering for next semester’s classes). I witnessed two people trying to switch sections, both dropped it, and then they couldn’t get back in.
