ok, my son just got back from orientation. He has his schedule but he would like to know if its possible to change it before he goes back on Aug 22nd. Obviously he is a freshman. Mostly all of the good classes are already filled. there was not too many options. he had a choice of taking harder classes that he would enjoy or easier classes that he might not enjoy. He went for the harder classes that he would enjoy. He wants to major in Biochem and he has chem 107, bio 117, intro psychology (don't know number) and a 2-credit writing course. They kinda told him that it was a very tough schedule but its 4 classes that he is very interested in.

If a gen ed class opens that he could take, could he switch it on his own at home?

Thanks in advance.

That schedule isn’t necessarily overly difficult. The thing about taking two lab sciences in one semester is that it takes up A LOT of class time. 3 hours of lectures, plus a lab, plus the recitation/discussion. So taking two of them could be a lot. If your son is used to taking AP courses (especially science ones) it could possibly be doable but there’s no way to know until he tries it for a bit.

If it appears to be too much I would recommend he drop chem and not bio, since chem has to be taken in the 107/108 fall/spring sequence, whereas the bio can be done in any order, spring or fall. So he could take CHEM 108 and BIOL 117 in the spring after he’s gotten used to the college-level work.

Unfortunately not, he would have to wail until the add/drop period starts which I believe goes from 8/22 until 9/16. Tell him to basically stalk the gen-eds he is interested in on the BU BRAIN so he can register when/if someone drops out of it.

Also keep in mind that if you drop something, you need to have at least 12 credits to be considered a full-time student, so I would make sure he has at least a 4 credit buffer (so 16 credits) so that if he has to drop one of the sciences after the add deadline (9/16), he doesn’t fall below the 12 credit line.
