Switching from BC to AB? WHAT TO DO...

Okay. So I got a D+ for my first quarter for BC Calc. -_-
I still have the entire year...but you know.. a D+...... like come on.
I study SO hard. I take extra calc BC classes on sunday and my friend tutors me.
I just do SO poorly on tests....i get an average of 60%...and my hw/participation is a 100%...but that doesn't really matter.
My teacher makes 80% of our grade test grades...so...i guess you can do the math... :p i'm doing horribly.
honestly this is my first D EVER. I've had almost ALL straight A's my entire high school career (junior now)..... :( (only taken HN/AP'S)

My teacher told me to consider switching down to AB.
I know this is probably the right choice for me.. and i want to go pre-med
in college.....so....IT'S NOT TOOOO BAD THAT I'M SWITCHING DOWN RIGHT????
i mean, i will push myself to get at least an A- or a B+ by the end of this year. DEF.

GUYS, WHAT DO I DO? It's a bit embarrassing to move down, because people think i'm smart. but i'm not -- ugh i hate life.
i've already kind of made up my mind to switching down...but you know..i'm conflicting with myself. ANY INPUT ON THIS??? PLEASE TELL ME. OO

It’s been a long time since I’ve done AP Calculus, but I did AB first and then BC the next year. Maybe things have changed, but I’m surprised the material in the first quarter is any different for the two.

Honestly, if the class itself is harder as a BC then I would drop down for the grade (provided there’s a substantial increase). If you’re doing it only for the exam I’d stick it out, because having BC on the transcript looks better and the BC exam is not particularly harder than the AB (I really wish I had just done BC the first year… then again I loved calculus).

I think the only extra material on BC is taylor series and a few basic differential equation questions – someone correct me if I am wrong – the majority of the exam is still AB (and you get an AB subscore anyway).

What is the difference between the two in terms of the class itself? I mean what tests is she giving, AP tests? Because I for some reason doubt your grade would go up that much just because you switch to AB.

AB goes a lot slower. Right now in BC my class, we’re doing chapter 4.4 and AB is just starting on chpater 4.1…haha ><
My teacher is not giving out AP tests, he makes his own tests i believe. BUT it’s super hard. :frowning:
AND in AB i heard if you don’t understand something (usually the entire class) then the teacher will slow down the pace a lot and review and go over key points with you. :stuck_out_tongue:
SO…i don’t know…i guess the only difference is that it’s for slower people… >< hahahahahaha …sigh… -_-

Well, that is not the case in my school. AB calc moves very fast because they try to get people into BC calc by the third trimester.

Why didn’t you take AB before BC?

What exactly is the reason for your D+?

I mean, I’ll be honest, it’s a really bad grade (guess I don’t need to tell you this). Is it carelessness, a real lack of understanding? Calculus does take some time to click, but once it does, it should be somewhat straightforward.

Probably the most challenging questions are Related Rates – which are covered in both AB and BC. The BC extension is really pretty simple stuff, if you ask me. That said, you mentioned the class goes slower, and I think considering you’re grade this is a good choice.

Also, because this is only for the quarter, the switch will not even show on the transcript, right?

Because it makes no sense wasting one year on AB and another on BC. I did AB in tenth and my teacher told me to do BC but I didn’t think it was worth it. Decided to do it next year just cause, and it took about two weeks of extra studying but I kept asking myself why am I wasting this extra money, should have done it last year…

Some people might not be able to do BC in one year, I don’t know, but I don’t know if taking two years of calculus in which 90% of the material is the same is worth it.

My D+ results in my lack of understanding i think. like i can solve derivatives if they ask for it directly (find dy/dx of___) but if they reword it a bit…i’ll get lost. for limits…haha i just didn’t really memorize my unit circle…and sometimes i don’t know how to simplify it.
and now we’re doing optimization problems… those…i just get SO lost on where to start. if i take my time (2 hours…) then i can do the hw accurately. yea…struggle. haha

my school doesn’t really allow people to take both calc classes. it’s either ab or bc. they don’t want you to take both >_< haha
and i actually hate math to my guts. i want to go to pre-med so i should’ve taken AP stats. i’ll take that next year.

lol I just have this feeling that we are in the same school
we had a requiz today and my grade went from B to D. I feel so stupid now.
honestly if you struggle too much, just switch out (if it doesn’t leave any bad trace on your transcript).
if you don’t switch out, try to time yourself when doing homework. that kind of works for me

haha if i switch out the secret will only travel around my school >< hahaha
the only thing that my school will send out to colleges are my FINAL grades in my math class i will choose to stay in. so basically the D+ will be in my “AB” class by the end of the year… :stuck_out_tongue: sigh…--

sit in the back of the class and wolfram alpha = A

In my class we take many AP exams. We do the problems for homework, class work, examples, and, yes, test questions. It really helps.

@Atlas It makes a lot of sense to take AB before BC. You get a strong foundation that you can’t get by only taking BC.

@OP Have you tried the same problems over again? Do you not understand how to apply the concepts? (i.e. derivative, mean value theorem, fundamental rules of calculus)
