S accepted to CAS but thinks he may want to switch to SMG after 1st year. If he does this, would it be wise to go into CAS as an Economics major? Also, is there a required course he’d have to take to be admitted into SMG? Would it be advisable to try and have him get into SMG now, or would it be okay if he waited until end of 1st year?

So many questions, I know – thanks for any and all information!

definitely try to get him into SMG now - I think that's pretty easy to do, just call the admissions office. If he waits and is in CAS for a year, Econ would be helpful because micro and macro are requirements in SMG. If he enters SMG after his freshman year, he'll have to take this really intensive management as a systems course, which tons of people do, but its better to be in SMG from the beginning. I think you have to get a B or something in manageent as a systems to bea dmitted to SMG

it is alot harder going from smg into cas than cas into smg. they will not let you into SMG unless you take SM299 and achieve higher than a B (which is basically the freshman SM121/122 mashed into one giant, horrible course of death. haha, well... not that bad)

and he can always BUCOP (dual-degree) or even minor in econ extremely easily even if in smg.

i was in this same situation, i applied to cas (and got in RD) and then switched over to smg asap before i even attended school in the summer. it was pretty easy to switch over, just make sure you call both the upo at smg AND the admissions office... usually the admissions people aren't so easy to deal with regarding this because i had some issue since i was officially accepted into "cas" not "smg" and apparently their acceptance rates vary lol
