Switching from COE to LSA

I was recently admitted to COE for fall 2017. While I initially planned on doing Mechanical Engineering, I’m now thinking of doing CS from LSA. According to the LSA website, I can only switch after attending 2 semesters in the College of Engineering. What classes would you recommend I take in my first two semesters to ensure that I’m not behind other CS majors in LSA when I switch at the end of my freshman year?

Congrats on your admission to COE. You should talk with a COE advisor at orientation about your changing interests, and then a CS advisor once the semester starts. You should likely start with Eecs 183 in the fall and then Eecs 203 and 280 in the winter if you want to major in CS. You will also need to take some Calc classes, depending on what you have in regards to AP/IB credit. As for transferring to LSA, you should attend a cross-campus transfer session in the fall at the Newnan Academic Advising Center. Once you do that, you can talk with a LSA advisor about class selections for the winter semester.

If you were already admitted to the CoE and you want to study CS, why not study Computer Science Engineering? Why would you want to do CS through LSA instead of through the CoE?

Here is a link comparing CS through LSA to CSE through CoE

As the site states, the requirements are almost the same. Thus, why go through the hassle of transferring?

@GoBlueAdvisor Thank you so much! Are supposed to register for classes before or after the orientation?

@777Blue77 I might want to double major/minor in Econ as well. I was reading on the website that it is easier to do so from LSA.
I was also reading that there is a Capstone project under LSA but not under COE but I couldn’t find that on the website. Do you know if that’s true?

If you switch to LSA you are subject to all of the LSA degree requirements, like 2 years of a foreign language, senior writing requirement, etc… Engineering has different requirements but no language . You can also do an LSA minor or double major while remaining at the engineering school.

Overall (IMO), the engineering school has better support services and guidance, and is a lot smaller and more manageable. LSA is huge and it is easier to fall through the cracks. The CS program is essentially identical in LSA + Engineering.

I would carefully discuss the options with your advisor. You register at summer orientation (starts in June) , so an early date is better. I would also check ‘rate my professor’ when you register.

The capstone project applies to honors. Engineering honors starts after 2 semesters, LSA can start immediately. The engineering honors program also (generally) involves a minor so that might work for you too.
