Just curious, does anyone know someone who'd done it before? Does the 1yr sit-out still applied?
Thanks

Are you inquiring about someone who is already at a D1 program?

Truthfully, I would call the NCAA about your very specific situation. They can guide you through the process as well as tell you how to apply for an exception (if needed and possible).

PS…This topic always seems to crop up most at the beginning of school.

Generally, the answer is “yes.” When you transfer from from a Division I to a lower NCAA level you don’t have to sit out a season. But each case may have a unique set of circumstances so you would be wise to follow fenwaysouth’s advice.

etondad,
Just want to educate myself about the different options. D is looking at D1 as the D3 schools that she looked at do not have very strong swim program. I just worry that the sports might take over her academic life. If she starts at a D1 school and does not like it after a season, I want to know if we can switch.

techmom13,

My bad. I thought D was currently enrolled. Here is the fairly easy to read and understand NCAA Transfer Guide. Your concerns are very valid, and not new to this board. That concern crossed my mind several thousand times when fenwaysouth son was a recruit. We used to have knock-em out drag-em out discussions at the dinner table about this topic. I knew what my son didn’t know as a rising freshmen. As a junior, he now knows what he didn’t know and Dad is looking pretty good and not so dumb. This is a huge thing. Transfer is always an option, but I would go in with eyes wide open so transfer is a last resort action…my two cents.

Thank you fenwaysouth. That document is very valuable. It looks like we can do it after all. But as you said, we need to go into this with eye wide open and consider all the pros and cons.
As a newbie on collegeconfidential and as a parent who did not participate in sports in college, this forum has helped us tremendously. I want to thank all who has helped and hope by this time next year, I’ll able to help some other newbie parents.
